Edwards Statement In Remembrance Of 9/11

EDWARDS STATEMENT IN REMEMBRANCE OF 9/11

Chapel Hill, North Carolina – Senator John Edwards released the following statement:

“We will never forget the tragedy that occurred on this day six years ago when the hijackers crashed their terrible ideology into the American dream. Nearly 3,000 Americans died on that heartbreaking day in New York City, in Arlington, Virginia, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. They were bankers and waiters, secretaries and firefighters, they were family and friends, and they were our fellow Americans.

“While the profound grief we still feel in this moment of remembrance will stay with us forever, we also find hope in the courage and compassion of those we lost.  Their sacrifice is a harsh and lasting reminder of what has become one of the great goals of our generation—to keep America safe and to root out terrorism from the face of the earth.

“Now, six years later, we must gain further strength from the sacrifices paid on 9/11. As we look forward, in the face of growing threats, Americans must remain vigilant in our fight against terrorism, and seek a new path that unites like-minded nations in a global mission to shut down terrorism once and for all.

“We have overcome great foes in the past. I have faith that through the same courage and strength displayed by the heroes of 9/11, we will do so again.”

Dodd Statement On Sixth Anniversary Of 9/11

DODD STATEMENT ON SIXTH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11

WASHINGTON - Today, Presidential Candidate Chris Dodd released the following statement on the sixth anniversary of 9/11:

"We take a moment today to remember the thousands of innocent people who lost their lives and the brave first responders who risked their lives to save others. Today, America reaffirms her commitment to ensure the cold, calculated and murderous attacks perpetrated against our country never happen again.

"This begins with quickly and safely ending the war in Iraq and using the resources we had been expending there to reinforce our efforts to secure Afghanistan and hunt down the real terrorists responsible for the 9/11 attacks. It will also require restoring our standing in the world by restoring our Constitution, saying "no" to torture and shutting down Guantanamo. And we must invest in our first responders who keep our country and our communities at the ready.

"The victims of 9/11 are in all of our prayers and our hearts go out to all their families on this day of remembrance."

Governor Mitt Romney On The Sixth Anniversary Of September 11, 2001

GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY ON THE SIXTH ANNIVERSARY OF SEPTEMBER 11, 2001

Boston, MA – Today, Governor Mitt Romney issued the following statement on the sixth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001:

"On this day, radical Islamists brought terror to our shores.  It is hard for our minds to contemplate a human darkness so vile that it celebrates murder and the destruction of innocent lives.  But we can honor the bright memories of the fallen.  Each person, whether taken in unknowing sacrifice or resigned to death after heroic struggle, stands in our mind's eye in the brilliant light of faith and patriotism.  In the years since 9/11, the spreading evil of radical Jihad has been visited on other cities around the world. Yet, our resolve remains strong.  From soldiers guarding our liberty on foreign shores to those of us living under the umbrella of the protection they provide, we are united in remembering loved ones lost on that day and in our determination to protect our homeland from future attacks."

Statement of Governor Bill Richardson in Commemoration of the Sixth Anniversary of the September 11 Attacks

Statement of Governor Bill Richardson in Commemoration of the Sixth Anniversary of the September 11 Attacks

SANTA FE, NM-- New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson issued the following statement in commemoration of tomorrow's sixth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States:

"Six years after the September 11 attacks, the world again will pause to remember the victims of that horrible morning. Time has helped heal some wounds, but we will never forget one of the darkest days in this country's history.

"To honor the lives of those we lost, the leaders of this country must pledge to do everything in their power to prevent another attack on our homeland. National security cannot and should not be about partisan turf wars. Congress and the White House must move forward in a bipartisan effort to strengthen our nation's security, improve our intelligence capabilities, and promote a foreign policy that unites the world against the scourge of international terrorism.

"The anniversary of September 11 is a solemn occasion for the nation and the world to remember the loved ones we lost. But it is also a reminder that we must make real progress in the face of a continuing threat."

Hagel Announces That He Will Not Be A Candidate In 2008

Hagel Announces He Will Not Seek A Third Term In Senate

OMAHA, NE –  United States Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) announced this morning that he will not seek a third term in the United States Senate and does not intend to be a candidate for any office in 2008.  Below is a text of Hagel’s remarks delivered at the Omaha Press Club:

“I will not seek a third term in the United States Senate, nor do I intend to be a candidate for any office in 2008.  It has been my greatest honor and privilege to serve my country and represent my fellow Nebraskans in the U.S. Senate.  My family and I will be forever grateful for this opportunity and the trust placed in me by the people of Nebraska.  It has enriched all of us.

I have always tried to live up to the promise I made to the people of Nebraska the day I announced my intention to seek this Senate seat.  On March 30, 1995 I said, “I intend to be a Senator all Nebraskans can be proud of.”  I hope I’ve done that, and made some contributions to our state and country along the way.  History will sort that out.

I am proud of my Senate record and deeply grateful to all those who helped get me there and keep me there, and those who have worked so hard for the people of Nebraska—my staff.  I would like to particularly thank Mike McCarthy, Ken Stinson and Lou Ann Linehan.  I owe a great deal to these three individuals.

I would have been unable to do my job without the love, wise perspective and constant encouragement of my wife Lilibet, my daughter Allyn and my son Ziller.  My appreciation for their support is immeasurable.  I would also like to thank my brothers, Tom and Mike, for their constant support and occasional brotherly constructive evaluations.

I said after I was elected in 1996 that 12 years in the Senate would probably be enough.  It is.  I have always believed that democracies work best when there is a constant cycle of new energy and ideas, and fresh leadership.

I will leave the Senate with the same enthusiasm, sense of purpose and love of my country that I started with.  I leave maybe a little wiser, surely a little more experienced and with a very respectable amount of humility.

Public service has always been a big part of my life, and I hope to have another opportunity to serve my country in some new capacity down the road.

This afternoon, my family and I will return to Washington, and I will go back to work.  I look forward to working as hard in the remaining 16 months of my Senate term for the people of Nebraska as I have over the last 11 years.

Thank you.”
