Obama Campaign Announces Communications And Field Directors For Iowa Campaign

OBAMA CAMPAIGN ANNOUNCES COMMUNICATIONS AND FIELD DIRECTORS FOR IOWA CAMPAIGN

Chicago, IL – Today, the Obama campaign in Iowa announced its Communications and Field Directors for the Iowa general election campaign.  Brad Anderson will serve as Communications Director and Tripp Wellde will serve as Field Director.  Last week, the Obama campaign announced that Jackie Norris is taking the helm as State Director for the Iowa campaign.

Brad Anderson served as Communications Director to Governor Chet Culver from August 2006 through May 2008, before being named as a partner at LinkStrategies, a Des Moines-based political consulting firm.  Prior to working for Governor Culver, he served as a political communications and research consultant to Democratic candidates across the country.  In 2003-04, Anderson served as an Iowa political and policy advisor to Sen. John Edwards during his 2004 presidential campaign.

Tripp Wellde has been with the Obama for America campaign since March 3, 2007, when he hit the ground in Davenport, IA. Since the historic victory in the Iowa Caucuses, Tripp has worked as a Regional Field Director in Nevada, Minnesota, and Ohio before helping the campaign clinch a key victory in North Carolina as Deputy Field Director. Mr. Wellde is thrilled to be back in Iowa and looks forward to uniting the Democratic Party to work toward victory in November.

“We are honored to have Brad and Tripp joining this campaign for change in Iowa,” said Obama for America Iowa State Director Jackie Norris.  “Brad’s many years of experience in Iowa politics, along with Tripp’s field experience across the country, will provide a major boost to our campaign team.  Iowa voters are hungry for the kind of change Barack Obama represents, and Senator Obama is in a strong position to compete for every single vote across the state.”

SCRIPT – “Dignity”

OBAMA:  I’m Barack Obama, and I approve this message.

Announcer: He worked his way through college and Harvard Law.

Turned down big money offers, and helped lift neighborhoods stung by job loss. Fought for workers’ rights.

He passed a law to move people from welfare to work, slashed the rolls by eighty percent.  Passed tax cuts for workers; health care for kids.

As president, he’ll end tax breaks for companies that export jobs, reward those that create jobs in America.

And never forget the dignity that comes from work.

Statement By John McCain On Today's Supreme Court Ruling On Second Amendment Rights

STATEMENT BY JOHN MCCAIN ON TODAY'S SUPREME COURT RULING ON SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHTS

ARLINGTON, VA -- U.S. Senator John McCain today issued the following statement regarding today's United States Supreme Court ruling on District of Columbia v. Heller:

Today's decision is a landmark victory for Second Amendment freedom in the United States. For this first time in the history of our Republic, the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed that the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms was and is an individual right as intended by our Founding Fathers. I applaud this decision as well as the overturning of the District of Columbia's ban on handguns and limitations on the ability to use firearms for self-defense.

Unlike Senator Obama, who refused to join me in signing a bipartisan amicus brief, I was pleased to express my support and call for the ruling issued today. Today's ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller makes clear that other municipalities like Chicago that have banned handguns have infringed on the constitutional rights of Americans. Unlike the elitist view that believes Americans cling to guns out of bitterness, today's ruling recognizes that gun ownership is a fundamental right -- sacred, just as the right to free speech and assembly.

This ruling does not mark the end of our struggle against those who seek to limit the rights of law-abiding citizens. We must always remain vigilant in defense of our freedoms. But today, the Supreme Court ended forever the specious argument that the Second Amendment did not confer an individual right to keep and bear arms.

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman

“Never before have we had this opportunity to showcase our cities to the world,” said Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman. “This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience and we encourage Minnesotans to show their Minnesota Nice by signing up this week.”

The Red Carpet Convention Package will include tickets to three of the hottest parties during the Convention including: the media party on Saturday, August 30; the delegate party on Sunday, August 31; and the Host Committee welcome reception on Monday, Sept. 1.  These parties are not open to the public.

“There are many amazing opportunities for Minnesotans to participate in this unique event and because most of the Convention-related activities take place in the late afternoon and evening, people can maintain their normal work schedule and still participate in history,” said Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak. “More than 45,000 guests from around the world will be visiting our state and it is our time to show our Minnesota hospitality and volunteer spirit.”

Convention Volunteer Sign-Up Week In Minneapolis Saint Paul

Volunteers will perform key duties in the areas of transportation, information services, hospitality and special events at various locations before, during and after the Convention, which will be held September 1-4 at the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minn.

“The support of the community has been tremendous thus far as we work to reach our goal of recruiting 10,000 volunteers,” said Cynthia Lesher, president of Minneapolis Saint Paul 2008 Host Committee. “The Red Carpet Convention Package gives us a chance to share the excitement of the Convention with someone who helps recruit volunteers to make this event a success.”

Prospective volunteers can apply online at www.msp2008.com where they will complete a secure, online application consisting of personal information and a summary of their skills and experience. All applicants must be 18 years-of-age or older and must be willing to undergo a security background check as well as attend orientation and training sessions conducted by Convention organizers. Volunteer applications will be accepted through July 15.

To be eligible for the Red Carpet Convention Package, individuals should send an email to volunteer@msp2008.com prior to completing the online application.  The Host Committee will provide a referral code that should be entered into the online application and used by anyone recruited by that individual.  Participants must recruit a minimum of 25 volunteers who commit to participating in mandatory training and at least two shifts during the Convention. The winner of the Red Carpet Convention Package will be announced August 13.
