United States Mint Honors John Quincy Adams with Sixth Presidential $1 Coin

United States Mint Honors John Quincy Adams with Sixth Presidential $1 Coin

WASHINGTON - The United States Mint paid tribute to the Nation's sixth President by releasing the John Quincy Adams Presidential $1 Coin into general circulation on May 15, 2008.  John Quincy Adams had a long and distinguished public service career.  After his Presidency, Adams served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 17 years.

"$1 coins are great for use in everyday transactions, and the John Quincy Adams Presidential $1 Coin is also an educational tool," said United States Mint Acting Deputy Director Dan Shaver. "As Americans use the coin in commerce, we hope it prompts them to learn about this President's contributions to our great Nation."

John Quincy Adams devoted most of his adult life to public service.  After graduating from Harvard College, he became a lawyer.  He was appointed minister to the Netherlands by George Washington and served in the administration of his father, President John Adams, as minister to Prussia.  He also was elected to the U.S. Senate.  While serving as Secretary of State in the administration of James Monroe, John Quincy Adams arranged with England for the joint occupation of the Oregon country and obtained from Spain the cession of the Floridas.

John Quincy Adams was elected President in 1824 and served one term in office.  John Adams, the Nation's second President, and John Quincy Adams, the sixth President, were the first father and son to be elected President of the United States.

While serving in the House of Representatives after his Presidency, John Quincy Adams worked tirelessly to end slavery in America.  He introduced many petitions to abolish slavery and the slave trade.  He also successfully represented the Amistad Africans before the U.S. Supreme Court, arguing that they were being held illegally as slaves because the international slave trade had been abolished, though slavery in America had yet to be ended.

The United States Mint has issued more than one billion Presidential $1 Coins in the order the Presidents served, starting with the George Washington Presidential $1 Coin in February 2007.  John Quincy Adams was the sixth President, and he is being honored with the sixth Presidential $1 Coin.

The design of the John Quincy Adams Presidential $1 Coin, like all of the Presidential $1 Coins, was created to be bold and dramatic.  The inscriptions "E Pluribus Unum" and "In God We Trust," as well as the date and the mint mark, are edge-lettered on the John Quincy Adams Presidential $1 Coin.  Next year, the 2009 Presidential $1 Coins will bear the inscription "In God We Trust" on the obverse (heads side) of the coin.

The obverse of the John Quincy Adams Presidential $1 Coin was designed and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart.  He also designed and sculpted the reverse (tails side) of all the Presidential $1 Coins, featuring a magnificent image of the Statue of Liberty.

The United States Mint inaugurated the Presidential $1 Coin Series with the George Washington Presidential $1 Coin on February 15, 2007, in time for Presidents Day weekend.  The John Adams Presidential $1 Coin followed on May 17, 2007; the Thomas Jefferson Presidential $1 Coin was introduced on August 16, 2007; the James Madison Presidential $1 Coin was introduced on November 15, 2007; and the James Monroe Presidential $1 Coin was released on February 14, 2008.

NEW OREGON AD: It’s About What’s Right For Oregon

NEW OREGON AD: It’s About What’s Right For Oregon
30-second television spot to air statewide

The Clinton Campaign launched a new ad in Oregon today, emphasizing that while the pundits in Washington focus on who’s up and who’s down, Hillary Clinton will focus on what’s right for Oregon families..

The 30-second spot, entitled “What’s Right,” details Hillary’s commitment to end the No Child Left Behind Act and provide quality, affordable health care for every American. And it emphasizes Hillary’s opposition to the Bush Administration energy bill, which removed local control over the siting of liquefied natural gas terminals on Oregon’s coast.

Following is the script for the ad.

Hillary for President

"What's Right"

TV :30

ANNCR: In Washington, they talk about who's up and who's down.

In Oregon, we care about what's right and what's wrong.

She's the one who will end No Child Left Behind so we teach children to learn, not take tests.

She's the one who voted against the Bush energy bill that threatens liquefied natural gas plants along Oregon's coast.

She's the one insisting on health coverage for every American

She's been right when it matters.

She'll be there when it counts.

HRC: I'm Hillary Clinton and I approved this message.

100 Days Out: DNCC Enters Home Stretch in Preparation For 2008 Democratic National Convention

100 DAYS OUT: DNCC ENTERS HOME STRETCH IN PREPARATION FOR 2008 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION
Convention Organizers Declare Readiness to Turn Focus from Planning to Execution in Lead-Up to Historic Four-Day Event, Capturing the Global Spotlight

DENVER - With Saturday marking just one hundred days to go until the eyes of the world turn toward Denver and the 2008 Democratic National Convention, the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) announced today that its plans remain on track or ahead of schedule for a truly historic event that promises to be an engaging celebration of the strength of the Democratic party, the diversity we embrace, the values we share and our vision for America. The Committee is entering the final preparatory stages and is now increasing focus on the executional and programmatic elements of the Convention.

"The organizational foundation has been laid, the operational framework has been built and it's now time to turn great plans into an even greater reality," said Leah D. Daughtry, CEO of the DNCC. "It's evident that our early start is now paying dividends as we enter this final stage of preparation. While there remains a significant amount of work to do in the next 100 days, I'm more confident than ever that when the gavel drops on August 25, we'll be ready to make history."

Consistent with planning cycles for previous Conventions, the final 100 days brings an increased focus on the official Convention schedule and program, ranging from delegate events and caucus meetings that take place each day to the themes, speakers and entertainment for each session at the Pepsi Center. Work on these elements continues to move forward.

"When our nominee takes the stage in August, it will be the culmination of a process that has engaged and inspired more than 35 million Americans and captured the attention of the world," Daughtry added. "Political conventions have determined the course of our nation's history. And in a few months, Denver will become part of this rich tradition."

Across all major operational areas, from logistics and transportation to construction and preparation for the media, the DNCC today provided an update on its key accomplishments and its overall readiness for the four-day event in August.

The DNCC is ready to kick off construction activities on July 7, when it has full access to the Pepsi Center. However, renovation plans to convert the Pepsi Center from sports arena to Convention hall are already underway.

  • Design plans for the Convention hall are underway. Alvarado-Turner-HOK, an association of three local companies with experience in large-scale projects and events, including the 1996 Democratic National Convention, was awarded the construction management contract and is making preparations to begin renovations once access is granted.
  • Audio, lighting and scenic designs are complete and initial designs for the podium and stage have been drawn up. Once we have a nominee, our production team is ready to put the nominee's stamp on the look and feel of the Convention hall.
  • More than 675,000 square feet of space has been allocated. Inside the Pepsi Center facility - from backstage to suites to team locker rooms - space has been allocated for a specific purpose to support Convention operations.
  • Nearly 200,000 square feet of media space has been allocated. Initial plans are complete for the media pavilions located outside the Pepsi Center that will provide workspace for many of the nearly 15,000 members of the media expected to attend the Convention.
  • Space has been allocated for more than 100 production trucks, media workspace trailers and broadcast transmission vehicles.

The DNCC has secured hotel rooms and meeting space for Convention guests - delegates, Democratic National Committee (DNC) and campaign staff, elected officials, allied groups and members of the media.

  • 17,000 hotel rooms in the Denver metro area are reserved: More than 90% of the hotel rooms have been assigned for Convention guests, and the Hyatt Regency Denver, a union hotel, was selected as the DNCC's official headquarters hotel.
  • Meeting space reserved at 100+ hotels and the Colorado Convention Center: All available meeting space at each official Convention hotel and the Colorado Convention Center, which will serve as an extension of the DNCC's Convention headquarters, is reserved for Convention-related use (delegation breakfasts, caucus meetings and training sessions).
  • 80% of all delegation hotels are within walking distance of the Convention hall or accessible by public transportation, and bus transportation will be provided for the remaining hotels.

The DNCC has developed an ADA-accessible, safe, secure and efficient transportation system for delegates, media, dignitaries and other Convention guests in partnership with the City of Denver, the Denver Regional Transportation District (RTD) and the Denver Police Department:

  • 250 buses planned for daily transport between official Convention hotels and the Pepsi Center: Denver-based Event Transportation Associates, Inc. (ETA) will plan and manage a bus shuttle system to operate continuously between all official Convention hotels and the Pepsi Center.
  • 400 motorpool vehicles provided by General Motors: As Official Vehicle Provider, General Motors will provide up to 400 vehicles for a motorpool to transport U.S. House and Senate Leadership, DNC and DNCC officials, and state party chairs.
  • 100% of buses and motorpool vehicles are flex fuel, hybrids or run on biofuel.

The DNCC has engaged a broad spectrum of federal, state and local elected officials; national and local party leaders and allied organizations on their participation in the Democratic National Convention.

  • Briefed and secured input from many national, regional and local elected officials on Convention planning - including Governors, Mayors, U.S. Senators and Representatives, the Denver City Council, and constituency organizations in Colorado.
  • Met with more than 80 national allied organizations regarding participation at the Convention. These groups include unions, community organizations, non-profit and voter education organizations, and advocacy and constituent groups.
  • More than 300 foreign dignitaries have been invited to attend the Convention by the National Democratic Institute (NDI).

Building on the unprecedented interest in the 2008 Democratic primary, the DNCC has continued to reach out and engage residents in Denver and the entire Rocky Mountain West in the Convention experience.

  • 21,000 volunteers have stepped forward to help ensure a successful Convention, a testament to the energy and enthusiasm both locally and throughout Colorado communities.
  • More than 750 people have attended "Convention Conversations" community forums in Denver, Pueblo, Boulder and Lakewood, Colorado; as well as Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. The forums are designed to provide opportunities for direct communication with top Convention organizers.
  • Nearly 1,200 Colorado middle and high school students submitted entries for the Convention "Write to Lead" youth essay contest. Two Presidential Winners will be invited to attend the event while fifty-four finalists will serve as ambassadors to state and territorial delegations.
  • Readership on DemCovention.com is up 40% since January, another signal of the building interest in the Convention.

The DNCC has set out to "bring down the walls" of the Pepsi Center and make the 2008 Democratic National Convention as inclusive and interactive as possible.

  • A DemConvention State Blogger Corps has been selected and will be credentialed in August to sit on the Convention floor with their state or territorial delegations. This 'front row' access will allow bloggers to provide even more localized coverage to their readers back home.
  • Live, gavel-to-gavel coverage of the Convention will be provided in HD at DemConvention.com. Through Official Provider Microsoft's Silverlight platform for interactive Web applications and HD video, and the Level 3 Communications network, the DNCC will bring live video coverage of the highest quality to a worldwide audience on DemConvention.com.
  • Convention 101, a series of web pages at DemConvention.com, was launched as the definitive source on all things Convention, detailing the rules and mechanics governing the Democratic Party's nomination process.

The DNCC is bringing to life its commitment to making this year's Convention the most environmentally-sustainable event of its kind:

  • Plans are in place for a resource recovery system that will divert a minimum of 85% of waste at Convention facilities from the landfill to a single-stream recycling center and composting facility.
  • 900 "Green Team" volunteers from the Host Committee volunteer pool will be on hand during Convention week to assist with our comprehensive recycling, composting and waste minimization program.

The DNCC has worked with more than 50 Colorado-based businesses and entrepreneurs who are providing a variety of services to ensure a successful, world-class Convention:

  • Key contracts have been awarded to local companies, including construction, transportation, printing, catering and event services, along with more than 100 Denver metro area hotels.
  • Credentials design theme selected. A Denver-based graphic designer was chosen to design the 2008 credentials for Convention attendees, including delegates, media and other guests. The credentials will include images that reflects Denver's history and diversity.
  • Local businesses are connecting to Convention business opportunities via an online database established through the Denver Host Committee - nearly 2100 vendors have signed up.

The Democratic National Convention, held from August 25-28, 2008, is expected to pump an estimated $160 million into the Denver area's economy and draw up to 50,000 visitors to the region.

Wisconsin Superdelegate for Obama; Delegate Countdown - 133.5 To Go

Wisconsin Superdelegate for Obama; Delegate Countdown - 133.5 To Go

CHICAGO, IL – Today, Wisconsin Superdelegate State Senator Lena Taylor endorsed Barack Obama, citing his ability to unite Americans for change.

Taylor’s endorsement means that Obama has been endorsed by 289.5 superdelegates. Obama is 133.5 delegates away from securing the Democratic nomination.

Taylor said, “After much reflection and soul searching I am pleased to announce my endorsement for Senator Barack Obama.  After a review of my recent County Executive race I am more aware then ever of the need to galvanize, motivate and inspire political participation by every member of society. Senator Obama has been a lightening rod in the effort to return citizens to the process. He’s awakened a sleeping giant – the people.  He has reenergized those weary of politics as we have come to know it by demonstrating both character and personal strength. He has connected with a cross-section of Americans, with a desire to do things better then we have done before.  He has an energy and commitment that is inclusive, thoughtful, contagious and deliberate. Senator Obama has the essential skill set to foster positive changes desperately needed for our nation.  His track record on policy, his diplomatic approach to conflict resolution and his keen awareness of the issues have positioned him to be the catalyst for change we need. Visionary, courageous and capable, Senator Obama is not only prepared to answer that 3am crisis phone call, he’s smart and experienced enough to avert it. I’m proud to endorse him today.”

RNC STATEMENT ON EDWARDS’ ENDORSEMENT OF OBAMA

RNC STATEMENT ON EDWARDS’ ENDORSEMENT OF OBAMA

WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Robert M. “Mike” Duncan released the following statement today:

“Barack Obama and John Edwards share an out-of-touch agenda that would raise taxes on families while cutting funding for our troops.  The only question is why didn’t Edwards endorse sooner?  Edwards’ endorsement of a candidate he previously blasted as inexperienced, hypocritical, and lacking substance will not help Obama with voters looking for real change.”

Bob Barr Announcement Transcript

NEWS CONFERENCE WITH FORMER REPRESENTATIVE BOB BARR (R-GA) TO ANNOUNCE HIS CANDIDACY FOR PRESIDENT REPRESENTING THE LIBERTARIAN PARTY DATE: MONDAY, MAY 12, 2008

MR. BARR: Thank you. If you all could scoot in a little bit.

Russ, thank you very much. We are indeed honored to have heading up our team Russ Verney. For those of you who have not had, as I have had and as Jerry has had, the pleasure of meeting and now working with Russ Verney, he has tremendous experience running not only national campaigns but third-party campaigns as well.

When we searched the length and breadth of the country to find somebody who really could put together a winning effort, who had the winning attitude and who had the knowledge and the background and the history of how to do this, there was one name that was always at the top of everybody’s list, and that is Russ Verney.

Russ, thank you very much for heading up our effort here. Thank you.

My name is Bob Barr, and I am a candidate for the presidency of the United States of America. (Applause.) I will be seeking the nomination of the Libertarian Party, for which I am a proud life member. And my wife Jeri is here and one of our sons, Derek, who works with me in my Atlanta office, and a number of other friends and colleagues, many of whom were introduced to you by Russ Verney just a few moments ago.

You might say, “Bob Barr, why are you running for president? Isn’t there a field already out there? Don’t we already have candidates out there? Aren’t the issues already being discussed? Will not there be a fair debate of the issues that are important, not just to the American people today but to their children and their grandchildren?”

And the answer is no, we do not. We do not have a field of candidates, currently or anywhere on the horizon, that understands and will raise the issues that are important to the great heritage of America, the history of this great land, the principles on which this great land was founded, the principles of fiscal conservancy, and who will work dramatically to help reshape this country in the image of our Founding Fathers and in the image of all those who have given so much to preserve liberty and freedom in this land.

And that is why, after very careful consideration, after having traveled many, many miles and many more on the Internet — taking lessons from my son Derek here, who is the millennial generation and who knows what the Internet is; he has taught me a great deal — but after having spent, over the last several weeks since we formed our exploratory committee in America’s heartland, I have heard from Americans from all walks of life, both here and abroad.

I just returned, for example, last evening from a debate in the UK, in the United Kingdom, and met several Americans over there who were students. And I heard the same thing from them as I hear from Americans here in this great land of ours, and that is, they want a choice. They believe that America has more and better to offer than what the current political situation is serving up to us.

And the reason for that is very simple. They believe in America as I believe in America. We believe in an America that is not and should not be and should never be driven by fear, as current policies on behalf of both parties are in this country. America is a nation formed on courage. It is a nation formed on the power to take risks and to reap the tremendous rewards that come from taking risks.

It is not a country that likes to operate in the cocoon of government power and government stability and government security. Indeed, as one looks across the policy landscape nowadays, one sees not only a lack of discussion of the true problems that face us, and not only superficial solutions that are served up to a somnambulant public, but we see solutions that bear little relationship at all indeed to the principles on which our country was founded, those great constitutional principles that used to have some currency here in Washington, principles such as habeas corpus, the great writ which has fallen into such disrepute under the current administration; principles such as separation of powers, which used to stand for that balancing of powers and keeping powers in check, but yet which similarly has fallen into great disrepute in Washington these days on behalf of both parties; principles such as the rule of law rather than the rule of men, which likewise has been discarded as inconvenient and a quaint notion on the part of the current leadership in Washington.

And this has all had the effect of giving us a government that has run amok fiscally, as the American people see their standard of living dropping. They are bothered by the fact, as I am bothered by the fact, that the standard of their government keeps going up.

I mean, indeed, the figures speak for themselves. During the first three months, during the first quarter of this year, as American businesses, large and small, were losing nearly 300,000 jobs, guess who was hiring. Guess where employment was going up: Government, to the tune of nearly 80,000 jobs. During that same period of time that Americans were losing their jobs in the private sector, government was hiring with enthusiasm.

The American people are bothered by this. As they see their dollar diminishing in value, both at home and abroad, they see no change in Washington’s appetite for their money. The debt is rising to historic levels. The deficit is rising. The budget stands at well over $3 trillion, bloated by such programs as subsidies for agricultural producers, the majority of which go to people and families with incomes in excess of $200,000.

These things bother the American people. They deserve better. They know they deserve better. I believe they deserve better. And the Libertarian Party deserves they believe (sic) better. They believe that they deserve a president who will actually stand up to the forces here in Washington, somebody who is not a part of that fraternity that has given us the crop of current candidates, who will stand up, as precious few presidents previously have, to the powers in Washington that want more, more, more, and say no; who, during his first year in office, his first days in office, will order a freeze on discretionary spending, will then seek to dramatically cut the size, the scope, the power of the federal government, not just in terms of the American taxpayers’ dollars that it spends, but in terms of the power of the American individual that it robs.

So this is a brief overview of those reasons that have gone into the decision-making process that bring me here today to our nation’s capital to announce my candidacy for the presidency of the United States of America.

I am a competitor. The American people are competitors. For far too long, they have been treated as serfs, not competitors, not peers, not equals. We aim to change this. And with the help of the American people, led by the team that Russ Verney has already begun putting together with Doug Bandow and others that have been introduced to you, and many more, we intend to succeed so that in November America will have and see a president who will then be sworn into office on January 20th of 2009 who believes that power resides and vests and shall be returned to the people of this land, not simply the power over their economic future here in this country, where Americans have seen the standards of living of their children being educated — diminished — even as we have an administration that champions the increase in educational standards in faraway lands.

The American people want to be once again in control of their lives, not beholden to those abroad who loan us money so that we can then engage in adventures overseas.

This will be a difficult process, not just the electoral process but the process of governing, of changing the direction of the ship of state that, under Democrat and Republicans alike, in almost similar measure, cycle after cycle after cycle, has simply added to rather than solved the problems that we currently see before us.

We appreciate very much you all coming here today, and we’ll be delighted to answer any questions that you all have. And as Russ mentioned, if there are questions — excuse me — if there are questions that relate to the specifics of the campaign, please see Russ about those.

He is in the process of putting together the team that will lead us through not just the Libertarian Party process, which will culminate in just a couple of weeks in the nomination process, which we’re confident of winning, but then thereafter over the ensuing months to victory in November.

Thank you.
