New Martin Van Buren $1 Coin Debuts on November 13, 2008

New Martin Van Buren $1 Coin Debuts on November 13, 2008

The newest Presidential $1 Coin honoring Martin Van Buren will be available to the public on Thursday, November 13, 2008. Born in 1767 in Kinderhook, New York, Martin Van Buren was the eighth President of the United States (1837-1841).

The son of a farmer and tavern keeper, Van Buren became involved in New York politics and in 1821 was elected to the United States Senate. By 1827, he had emerged as the principal northern leader for Andrew Jackson. President Jackson rewarded Van Buren by appointing him Secretary of State, and viewed him as his most trusted advisor. In 1832, Van Buren was elected Vice President on the Jacksonian ticket, and in 1836 he won the Presidency.

Interestingly, Martin Van Buren was:

  • The first president to be born an American citizen (his predecessors were born before the revolution.)
  • The only president who did not speak English as a first language (he grew up speaking Dutch.)
  • The third president to serve only one term, after John Adams and his son, John Quincy Adams.
  • One of only two people to serve as Secretary of State, Vice-President, and President (the other was Thomas Jefferson.)
  • A key organizer of the Democratic Party and a dominant figure in the Second Party System.
  • Defeated for reelection by William Henry Harrison and the Whigs in 1840, Van Buren ran unsuccessfully for President on the Free Soil ticket in 1848. He died in 1862 at his Lindenwald estate in Kinderhook.

McCain-Palin 2008 Launches New Television Ad: "Freedom"

McCain-Palin 2008 Launches New Television Ad: "Freedom"

ARLINGTON, VA -- Today, McCain-Palin 2008 released its latest television ad, entitled "Freedom." The ad features John McCain speaking directly to the American people about his belief in this country and his plan to build a stronger America by growing our economy and cutting waste. In this election, the American people are offered a clear choice -- hope for a stronger America or the knowledge that we will build a stronger America because only John McCain has the experience and leadership to do so. The ad will be televised in key states.

Script For "Freedom" (TV :30)

JOHN MCCAIN: I've served my country since I was 17 years old.

And, spent five years longing for her shores.

I came home dedicated to a cause greater than my own.

We can grow our economy.

We will cut government waste.

Don't hope for a stronger America.

Vote for one.

Join me.

ANNCR: McCain.

John McCain: I'm John McCain and I approve this message.

Actress Maria Conchita Alonso Endorses John McCain

ARLINGTON, VA -- Today the McCain-Palin campaign announced the endorsement of Maria Conchita Alonso, a Latin American actress who has starred in television and film for three decades. Alonso, who was born in Cuba and raised in Venezuela, recently appeared on CSI: Miami and Desperate Housewives and starred alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Running Man.

"As a Latina and a new American citizen, I believe in this country and its people, and I believe that we need more than just 'change.' We need a leader who can bring about the right kind of change, and John McCain has the experience and judgment necessary to lead us in these uncertain times," Alonso said. "I grew up in Cuba and Venezuela, and I am appalled that Barack Obama apparently wants to emulate the "spread the wealth" economic policies of those countries and negotiate with their leaders. For me the choice is clear, and I believe it is my duty to share my views even though it might not make me popular in Hollywood."

After a successful career in Venezuela as a beauty queen, telenovela star, film actress and singer, Alonso emigrated to the United States from Caracas, Venezuela in 1982. She has appeared in dozens of films and television shows since then and was the first South American star to star on Broadway.

Minnesota Is Well-prepared For Record Voter Turnout On Election Day

Minnesota is well-prepared for record voter turnout on Election Day

SAINT PAUL, Minn.―Oct. 31, 2008―Secretary of State Ritchie today said Minnesota is well-prepared for record voter turnout on Election Day. He attributes this readiness to the removal of a number of unnecessary barriers to voting by his office and careful preparations made by county and local election officials, including the hiring and training of over 30,000 election judges. In addition, high voter interest has been fueled in part by highly visible candidates who inspire the electorate.

"For two years I have traveled the state speaking to many Minnesotans about the importance of participating in democracy," Ritchie said. "Last summer, our office set an ambitious goal of 80 percent turnout of eligible voters for this year's election in Minnesota. We have worked hard to reach this goal and to keep Minnesota number one in the nation in voter turnout."

The last time Minnesota achieved 80 percent turnout was 1956 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower defeated challenger Adlai Stevenson. To reach our "80 in 08" goal, 2.99 million Minnesotans must cast ballots in this election.

This has already been an election year for the record books. Due to the tremendous voter registration efforts by political parties, civic organizations, religious groups and others, we have reached an all-time high. As of today, there are 3,199,307 registered voters. The total number of voter registrations thus far in 2008 is 337,792, with over a third being new registrations and the rest were address or name changes. Over half of the new registrations were young adults. As of today, there are 597,758 registered voters ages 18-29.

In addition to voters who have pre-registered, election officials are expecting hundreds of thousands of voters to register at the polls on Election Day. In 2004, 581,904 Minnesotans used Election Day Registration, of those 235,851 were new registrations.

The Office of the Secretary of State has been busy all year working to reach this voter turnout goal, partnering with county election officials and others to conduct voter outreach and education activities. In addition, this office provides a free, easy-to-use Web site that helps voters find out where they vote, information about candidates who will be on the ballot, and general information about what to expect on Election Day. With our Election Day Registration system, voters who have not pre-registered can do so at the polling place on Nov. 4.

"Minnesota has long been recognized as the national leader in both turnout and election administration." said Ritchie. "Thanks to the hard work of tens of thousands of volunteers and local officials, all Minnesotan's will be able to vote with ease and security on Nov. 4."

Voters with any question can visit the secretary of state's Web site at: www.sos.state.mn.us.
