RNC Response To Democrat Debate

RNC RESPONSE TO DEMOCRAT DEBATE

WASHINGTON – RNC Chairman Robert M. “Mike” Duncan released the following statement tonight:

“Both Democrat candidates showed voters why they should not be Commander in Chief in a time of war and economic uncertainty.  Barack Obama’s inexperience was demonstrated by his admission that he failed to convene one Foreign Relations subcommittee hearing and his contradictory stances on NAFTA.  Senator Clinton’s credibility hit an all-time low as she advocated a government-run health care plan and then refused to explain how she would pay for or enforce it.  After tonight’s debate in Cleveland, I am more confident than ever that a Republican will prevail this fall.”

Hillary's Reviews Are In: Democratic Debate At Cleveland State, Cleveland, Ohio

Hillary's Reviews Are In: ‘A Strong New Note,’ ‘Effective Tone,’ ‘A Solid Body Blow’

NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell –Hillary ‘came across very credibly, very strongly as a fighter.’ [MSNBC post-debate analysis, 2/26/08]

NBC News’ Domenico Montaro – ‘That was a solid body blow by Clinton on Obama not holding a single hearing on Afghanistan.’ “That was a solid body blow by Clinton on Obama not holding a single hearing on Afghanistan despite that he talks about it being the front line on terrorism and that he chairs the subcommittee on Europe, which oversees NATO. While Obama's explanation may be realistic -- that he became chair at the beginning of his campaign -- doesn't it reinforce Hillary and Bill Clinton's points that he is inexperienced, that he has only been in the Senate for a limited time and hasn't cut his teeth yet. Doesn't that play right into the inexperience narrative quite well?” [MSNBC First Read, 2/26/08]

ABC News’ Rick Klein – ‘It does seem like Clinton has settled on an effective tone this evening.’  “That silly distraction of an SNL reference aside -- it does seem like Clinton has settled on an effective tone this evening. She's mixing substance with style, attacking without seeming overtly negative, sounding like she's playing defense when she's really playing offense.” [ABC News Political Radar, 2/26/08]

The Swamp's Jason George – 'Clinton strikes a new strong note, saying she plans to get $55 billion back from special interest groups for the American middle class.' [Chicago Tribune’s The Swamp, 2/26/08]

NBC News’ David Gregory said Hillary’s ‘answer on having to be a fighter on health care is her strong suit.’ “Senator Clinton the fighter. This answer on having to be a fighter on health care is her strong suit. Her point in lampooning Obama's high-flying oratory is to say, I, too, had only the highest ideals about public service in Washington. But I know through experience, you need different tactics. This is her experience argument.” [MSNBC First Read, 2/26/08]

MyDD’s Todd Beeton – Hillary’s ‘I’m a fighter’ line was ‘one of her best selling points.’ "Hillary Clinton: "I'm a fighter." One of her best selling points, especially against Obama." [MyDD.com, 2/26/08]

Ohio Daily Blog – ‘Clinton did well with Russert's question about her 2000 pledge about creating jobs in Buffalo.’ [Ohio Daily Blog, 2/26/08]

WCPO Radio’s Dan Walthrip – ‘Hillary Clinton certainly claimed ownership of the word 'universal' in terms of healthcare.’ [WKYC post-debate analysis, 2/26/08]

Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin Endorses Barack Obama

South Dakota Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin Endorses Barack Obama

Citing hope for "a new direction in American politics and a positive change in Washington," U.S. Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin (D-South Dakota, at-large) today endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for President of the United States. "Senator Obama is the right candidate for rural America. He has demonstrated a deep understanding of the tremendous opportunities that come with a transition to a clean energy economy powered by homegrown renewable energy. His policy priorities as well as his bipartisan and inclusive approach convince me that he is the best candidate to lead the country forward," said Herseth Sandlin.

Senator Obama stated, "I'm proud to have the support of Congresswoman Herseth Sandlin. Congresswoman Herseth Sandlin is a recognized leader in the House on renewable energy and rural issues. And I look forward to working with her to refocus our energy policy in a way that reduces our dependence on foreign oil, enhances our national security, and creates jobs in South Dakota and across rural America."

Herseth Sandlin indicated that after speaking with Senator Obama, she became convinced that his vision and ideas will inspire action that is good for South Dakota and good for the country: "From his commitment to wind energy development to investing in new, groundbreaking technology for cellulosic ethanol, I am convinced that Senator Obama will be a president who capitalizes on what South Dakota's communities, families and entrepreneurs have to offer."

Herseth Sandlin added, "Like many Americans and many South Dakotans, I have been inspired by Senator Obama's commitment to finding common ground, and his ability to generate a groundswell of hope and optimism among people of all ages, and of all political stripes. The challenges we face in our country demand a leader willing to put partisanship aside in order to get things done. I'm proud to announce my support for Senator Barack Obama."

Senator Chris Dodd Endorses Barack Obama for President

Senator Chris Dodd Endorses Barack Obama for President

Cleveland, OH - Today, at a press conference in Cleveland, Ohio, United States Senator Christopher Dodd endorsed Barack Obama for president.

Below is Senator Dodd's statement:

"I am here to express my strong support for the candidacy of Barack Obama. This is a moment of unity in our country, a time where we need to come together as a Democratic party and to get behind a candidacy that expresses the aspirations, the hopes, the ambitions of millions and millions of Americans. And I believe that Barack Obama has demonstrated that not only in the campaign, but also in his service to his state and his country.

"Four years ago, we met a man who refused to resign himself to fear. A man who reminded us that all of us -- red states and blue states, white and black and Latino and Asian - are united by far more than that which divides us. In debates, in town hall meetings, before unprecedented crowds in rural Iowa and Virginia, he called us to share in our sacrifice. He told us uncomfortable truths yet inspired us as so many of our greatest leaders have with new faith in the promise of America.

"The question has always been the same: "Yes, but is he ready?" Since that time, he has been poked and prodded, analyzed and criticized, called too green, too trusting, too lofty. And for all of that, he's already won half of our nation's states and primaries and caucuses and the votes of more than 10 million Americans, showing judgment, grace and poise in the process.

"Over all that time, I've been watching, on the Foreign Relations Committee, on the Labor Committee in which we served, and as a fellow candidate for the presidency of the United States. I'm proud to be the first 2008 presidential candidate to endorse Barack Obama. He is ready to be President.

"Over the last number of years I've listened to people talk about ‘Reagan Democrats.' I now stand next to a candidate where we talk about ‘Obama Republicans' because his appeal is reaching far beyond the politics of our own party. It is reaching into circles of Independents, Republicans, who are desirous and anxious for change.

"And so having been an individual involved in the Family and Medical Leave Act, involved in family issues, I am completely convinced that Barack Obama will stand up for American families and make a difference. Having served on the Foreign Relations Committee, having been a Peace Corps volunteer, I am convinced that Barack Obama will make a difference when it comes to the international politics of our nation, to develop a kind of support we need to deal with global terrorism and to end the terrible war in Iraq.

"I'm also convinced as a former Peace Corps volunteer that Barack Obama will appeal and excite the imagination of younger people, to stand up and contribute, to give something back to our country. Barack pointed out how I was inspired by a former American president. I've been asked a million times over the last forty years why I joined the Peace Corps. I did because an American president asked me to. I think today we are witnessing across this country that people are asking for leadership to ask them to be involved in things larger than themselves. And this candidacy of Barack Obama inspires that.

"When I was in the Peace Corps, I was asked over and over again by the people of the little village of Monción in the Dominican Republic where I served as a volunteer. The Spanish question was "¿Por que viniste? Por que viniste a Moncion?" "Why did you come to Moncion?" The answer I gave over and over again was someone had asked me to, to make a difference.

"The question may be asked this morning here in Ohio and in Texas. ¿Por que viniste Cleveland or Texas? And the answer I'll give is because someone asked me to. Someone who wants to make a difference for our country. Someone who wants to see get America back on its feet again. To become strong and vibrant again. To become young again. To be full of confidence and optimism as we face the challenges, significant challenges, at home and abroad. I believe that individual who can make that difference is the man standing next to me, the next President of the United States, and I'm honored to stand with him in this effort."

Below is Senator Obama's statement:

"It has been my pleasure to serve alongside Chris Dodd in the United States Senate and share a stage with him during his principled run for the presidency. Chris Dodd loves his country - and believes in the ideal of public service - as much as anyone I know. From his years as a young Peace Corps worker in the 1960s to this very day, Senator Dodd has devoted his life to building a stronger, fairer, healthier America; and a more just and secure world.

"Whether it was his work to protect voting rights; his long, determined battle for the Family and Medical Leave Act; his leadership on U.S. relations with Latin America; or his defense of our Constitution - Chris Dodd has been at the forefront of some of the most important issues of our time. He has worked hard to preserve the right of workers to organize despite an onslaught from a hostile administration. He has been an advocate for our children, and no one has fought harder to improve our schools. He has been a voice for unity amid the often bitter debate over immigration reform. And I have seen firsthand on the Foreign Relations Committee his commitment to restoring our standing in the world.

"But as passionate as Chris Dodd is about the causes he champions, he also has that rare ability to disagree without being disagreeable. He is respected on both sides of the aisle for his authenticity, reason, and civility. And that is how, time and again, he's been able to bring Democrats and Republicans together to make a real difference in the lives of the American people.

"He conducted his campaign for President with that same character. He resisted the cheap and easy shots, and elevated the debate with important ideas about how to address the great challenges we face. He and I share a deep commitment to take our country in a new direction, and I am grateful for his endorsement."

Chris Dodd Endorses Barack Obama For President

Chris Dodd e-mail to supporters announcing his endorsement of Baack Obama.

We have been through a lot in this past year and your friendship and support have meant so much to me.  That is why I wanted to let you know of my decision to endorse a Democratic candidate for President - and that I have decided to support Barack Obama.

We all understand how much is at stake in this election and that it is more important than ever that we put a Democrat in the White House.

And while both of our Party's remaining candidates are extremely talented and would make excellent commanders-in-chief, I am throwing my support to the candidate who I believe will open the most eyes to our shared Democratic vision.

I'm deeply proud to be the first 2008 Democratic presidential candidate to endorse Barack Obama.  He is ready to be President.  And I am ready to support him - to work with him and for him and help elect him our 44th President.

Put simply, I believe Barack Obama is uniquely qualified to help us face this housing crisis, create good jobs, strengthen America's families in this 21st century global economy, unite the world against terrorism and end the war in Iraq - and perhaps most importantly, call the American people to shared service and sacrifice.  In this campaign, he has drawn millions of voters into politics for the first time in their lives and shown us that we are united by so much more than that which divides us.

That is why I believe the time has come for Democrats to come together as a Party and focus on winning the general election.  The stakes are too high not to.

The last seven years have been as difficult as any I can remember. More than ever, we need a President who will inspire us to take part in the political process and change our country's path.

Today, when we need it most, we are hearing a new call from Barack Obama.  And I hope you, like me, will answer it in the affirmative.

Please get involved in Barack Obama's campaign now.

Sincerely,

Chris Dodd

Nader Launches Presidential Bid On NBC’s Meet The Press With Tim Russert

Nader Launches Presidential Bid

Washington, D.C. – Ralph Nader today threw his hat into the 2008 Presidential ring.

Nader announced his candidacy on NBC’s Meet the Press with Tim Russert.

At the same time, the Nader campaign launched a web site – votenader.org.

The campaign web site highlights twelve fundamental differences between the Nader campaign and the corporate Republicans and corporate Democrats.

In a letter posted on the campaign web site this morning, titled Civics Test, a group of Nader supporters ask:

“Of the following Presidential candidates – Ralph Nader, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John McCain – which one supports a single payer, Canadian style, free choice, Medicare for all health care system?

Answer: Ralph Nader

Which one supports solar energy and would take nuclear power off the table?

Answer: Ralph Nader

Which one would cut the huge bloated wasteful military budget?

Answer: Ralph Nader

Which one would reverse U.S. Middle East policy in Israel/Palestine, Iraq and Iran?

Answer: Ralph Nader

Which one would launch an aggressive crackdown on corporate crime and corporate welfare?

Answer: Again, only Ralph Nader.”

A separate letter, titled “Mr Frugal,” agrees that Hillary Clinton’s campaign spending $3.8 million in January on one consultant alone was “stunning.”

“Give our candidate – we call him Mr. Frugal – $3.8 million and he’ll get us on the ballot all across this country,” the letter reads.

The web site encourages people to join a Road Trip for Ralph – where volunteers will travel the country, getting Nader on the ballot in all fifty states.

On Meet the Press, Nader said that “dissent is the mother of assent.”

Nader said people are feeling “locked out, shut out, marginalized and disrespected.”

“You go from Iraq, to Palestine to Israel, from Enron to Wall Street, from Katrina to the bumbling of the Bush administration, to the complicity of the Democrats in not stopping him on the war, stopping him on the tax cuts (for the wealthy).”

“In that context, I have decided to run for president,” Nader told Russert.

Nader called Obama “the first liberal evangelist in a long time.”

But Nader said that Obama is censoring his better instincts.

“Senator Obama’s record has not been a challenging one,” Nader said. “He’s not been a Senator Wellstone or Senator Abourezk or Senator Metzenbaum by any means. He has leaned, if anything, more toward the pro-corporate side of policymaking. The issue is – do they have the moral courage? Do they have the fortitude to stand up against the corporate powers and get things done? Yes, get things done for the American people?”

Obama Campaign Airs New TV Ad In Texas: "Need"

Obama Campaign Airs New TV Ad in Texas: "Need"
In new TV ad, Obama Vows to Cut Taxes for Working Americans and Seniors

Austin, TX - Senator Barack Obama's Texas campaign began airing a thirty-second spot, entitled "Need." Obama describes American workers as the "bedrock" of our economy and offers his plan to reverse the widening gap between the middle class and the wealthy.

For more than two decades-as a community organizer, a civil rights attorney, a state legislator, and a United States Senator-Obama has been fighting to improve the lives of working Americans. As President, Senator Obama will provide middle class Americans tax relief by cutting income taxes by $1,000 for working families to offset the payroll tax they pay and eliminate income taxes altogether for seniors who make less than $50,000 annually.

This Administration has further divided Wall Street from Main Street.  You got CEOs who are making more in ten minutes than ordinary workers are making in a year.

The bedrock, the foundation of our economy is our workers.

And the middle class have been treading water or worse.

My plan says let's return some balance to our tax code.  Close these corporate loopholes the lobbyist put in and let's make sure that tax breaks are given to people who really need it.

Clinton Campaign Unveils Four New Ads Across Ohio & Texas

Clinton Campaign Unveils Four New Ads Across Ohio & Texas

The Clinton campaign today unveiled four new ads across Ohio and Texas.
The 60-second ad called “Resolved” is airing in both Ohio and Texas.
“Deliver,” a 30-second ad, is airing across Texas.
“Proud” and “Level,” both 30-second ads, are airing in Ohio.

See below for the full scripts of the ads.

1. “Resolved”

TV :60

Hillary Clinton:  I was honored to be asked to speak at the opening of the Intrepid Center at Brooke Medical Center in San Antonio.  And I remember sitting up there and watching them come in. Those who could walk were walking, those who had lost limbs were trying with great courage to get themselves in without the help of others.

You know, the hits I've taken in life are nothing compared to what goes on every single day in the lives of people across our country.  And I resolved, at a very young age, that I'd been blessed, and that I was called by my faith and by my upbringing to do what I could to give others the same opportunities and blessings that I took for granted.  That's what gets me up in the morning, that's what motivates me in this campaign.

Hillary Clinton: I'm Hillary Clinton and I approved this message.

2. “Deliver”

TV :30

Announcer: In Texas, when there's work to be done, talk doesn't cut it.

You got to roll up your sleeves, stand your ground and deliver.

That's what Hillary Clinton does.

She's fought for and delivered coverage for uninsured children, healthcare

and dignity for our veterans, and better schools and better teachers.

In Texas its better done than said. And when its all said and done,

Hillary delivers.

Hillary Clinton: I'm Hillary Clinton and I approved this message.

3. “Proud”
TV :30

John Glenn: Hillary and I both come from middle class families in the
middle of America.

As long as Annie and I have known her, Hillary's fought for working people.

She'll end 55 billion dollars in giveaways to corporate special interest and invest that money to create jobs in research and innovation to rebuild the middle class.

And Hillary will fight to change trade deals like NAFTA. She's been doing that for years.

I'll be proud to call Hillary my president.

Hillary Clinton: I'm Hillary Clinton and I approved this message.

4. “Level”

TV :30

Announcer: She's fighting for America's middle class.

Hillary Clinton: It's time to level the playing field against the special interests.

Announcer: She'll end $55 billion dollars in giveaways to corporate special interests and invest it in middle class tax cuts and creating new jobs.

She'll get tough on unfair trade deals and end tax breaks to companies that ship jobs overseas.

Hillary Clinton: Standing up for people who weren't getting a fair shake, that's been the purpose of my life. And it will be the purpose of my presidency.

Hillary Clinton: I'm Hillary Clinton and I approved this message.
