Senator McCain Statement On Resignation Of Fidel Castro

Senator McCain Statement On Resignation Of Fidel Castro

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) today released the following statement on the resignation of Fidel Castro:

"Today's resignation of Fidel Castro is nearly half a century overdue.  For decades, Castro oversaw an apparatus of repression that denied liberty to the people who suffered under his dictatorship.

"Yet freedom for the Cuban people is not yet at hand, and the Castro brothers clearly intend to maintain their grip on power.  That is why we must press the Cuban regime to release all political prisoners unconditionally, to legalize all political parties, labor unions and free media, and to schedule internationally monitored elections.

"Cuba's transition to democracy is inevitable; it is a matter of when - not if.  With the resignation of Fidel Castro, the Cuban people have an opportunity to move forward and continue pushing for the moment that they will truly be free.  America can and should help hasten the sparking of freedom in Cuba.  The Cuban people have waited long enough."

Statement From Hillary Clinton On Fidel Castro

Statement From Hillary Clinton On Fidel Castro

“As you know, Fidel Castro announced that he is stepping down as Cuba's leader after 58 years of one-man rule.  The new leadership in Cuba will face a stark choice—continue with the failed policies of the past that have stifled democratic freedoms and stunted economic growth—or take a historic step to bring Cuba into the community of democratic nations. The people of Cuba want to seize this opportunity for real change and so must we.

“I would say to the new leadership, the people of the United States are ready to meet you if you move forward towards the path of democracy, with real, substantial reforms.  The people of Cuba yearn for the opportunity to get out from under the weight of this authoritarian regime, which has held back 11 million talented and hardworking citizens of the Americas.  The new government should take this opportunity to release political prisoners and to take serious steps towards democracy that give their people a real voice in their government.

“The American people have been on the side in the Cuban people's struggle for freedom and democracy in the past and we will be on their side for democracy in the future.

“As President, I will engage our partners in Latin America and Europe who have a strong stake in seeing a peaceful transition to democracy in Cuba, and who want very much for the United States to play a constructive role to that end.  The United States must pursue an active policy that does everything possible to advance the cause of freedom, democracy and opportunity in Cuba.

“The events of the past three days, including elections in Pakistan and Kosovo's declaration of independence, are a vivid illustration of people around the world yearning for democracy and opportunity.  We need a President with the experience to recognize and seize these opportunities to advance America’s values and interests around the world.  I will be that President.”

Statement Of Senator Barack Obama On Fidel Castro Stepping Down

STATEMENT OF SENATOR BARACK OBAMA ON FIDEL CASTRO STEPPING DOWN

CHICAGO, IL - Senator Barack Obama today released the following statement on Fidel Castro stepping down.

Statement from Barack Obama:
“Today should mark the end of a dark era in Cuba's history. Fidel Castro's stepping down is an essential first step, but it is sadly insufficient in bringing freedom to Cuba.

“ Cuba's future should be determined by the Cuban people and not by an anti-democratic successor regime. The prompt release of all prisoners of conscience wrongly jailed for standing up for the basic freedoms too long denied to the Cuban people would mark an important break with the past. It's time for these heroes to be released.

“If the Cuban leadership begins opening Cuba to meaningful democratic change, the United States must be prepared to begin taking steps to normalize relations and to ease the embargo of the last five decades. The freedom of the Cuban people is a cause that should bring Americans together.”

Missouri Governor Matt Blunt Endorses John McCain For President

MISSOURI GOVERNOR MATT BLUNT ENDORSES JOHN MCCAIN FOR PRESIDENT

ARLINGTON, VA -- U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign today announced that Missouri Governor Matt Blunt has endorsed John McCain for president. Governor Blunt issued the following statement on his endorsement:

"I had the opportunity today to talk to Senator McCain and I told him he is the best person to lead our country as President of the United States. John McCain is a revered hero at our shared alma mater. As I have said, he was the commencement speaker when I graduated the Naval Academy and he is held up as a model of heroic leadership in the face of tremendous adversity.

"John McCain is the best person running for president to protect our nation from the radical Jihadists who hate our country, hate our freedom and values, and who are seeking to terrorize Americans and destroy our way of life. We are a nation at war against these terrorists and we cannot afford the risk of Democrat opponents like Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama who should be able to see the same threat, but question whether America is at fault.

"America deserves a leader like John McCain who will defend our freedom and help spread freedom and democracy around the world. As the campaign for the presidency moves forward, I will continue to remind Missourians that the desire for change is not the same thing as a desire to abandon principle, but instead, it is a call to apply our time-honored values in innovative ways to new challenges.

"John McCain is the best person to lead our nation in these challenging times and I will give my full support to his campaign."

John McCain thanked Governor Blunt for his support, stating, "I'm honored to have the support of a fellow midshipman and a true leader in Missouri. Governor Blunt's support will be a tremendous asset as we work towards victory in November."

Nixon Foundation Launches New Nixon Blog

Nixon Foundation Launches New Nixon Blog
Goal: stir up servings of RN policy, politics and culture

With an eye on the upcoming Presidential elections and the nation's dramatically growing interest in politics and government, the Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace Foundation will introduce its own blog, The New Nixon, at 9:00 am on Presidents' Day, Monday, February 18.

Noted commentators including Hugh Hewitt, KRLA talk show host and former White House staffer; Jack J. Pitney, Claremont McKenna College Professor of American Politics; and John H. Taylor, executive director of the Nixon Foundation, will be among the inaugural bloggers.

"Forty years ago, the new Nixon became a catch phrase as the former Vice President prepared to enter primaries," said Taylor.  "Some derided him as, 'supposedly new Nixon," others around the candidate himself took up the concept of a new Nixon as someone having served eight years as Vice President and traveled the world interacting with leaders as he prepared for his run in 1968."

RN won in 1968, becoming America's 37th President.

Nixon fans and critics alike are invited to offer feedback to the blogger's commentary on RN politics, culture and policy --  all with a Nixon spin.  "Those who participate in the dialogue on The New Nixon blog will themselves be part of creating the next new Nixon, the nuanced new Nixon," Taylor predicted.

Former President George H.W. Bush Endorses John McCain For President

FORMER PRESIDENT GEORGE H.W. BUSH ENDORSES JOHN MCCAIN FOR PRESIDENT

ARLINGTON, VA -- At a press conference in Houston today, former President George H.W. Bush endorsed John McCain for president.

President Bush made the following statement on his endorsement:

"Today we are living in a time of war, a new and vastly more complex time of war. We also have more important challenges at home, chief among them, we clearly need to address those parts of our economy that demand attention. And at this critical time in history, the key point I want to make is the United States of America cannot be permitted to falter. Part of our Republican creed is a prevailing sense of duty. In the coming election, we do not have the luxury of taking a pass on our unique role and responsibilities in the world. And the indisputable fact that unites the greatest number of Republicans, most independents and many good Democrats is the fact that no one is better prepared to lead our nation at these trying times than Senator John McCain.

"As someone who also helped lead our great Party at the RNC and later as President, I believe now is the right time for me to help John in his effort to start building the broad-based coalition it will take for our conservative values to carry the White House this fall. His character was forged in the crucible of war. His commitment to America is beyond any doubt. But most importantly, he has the right values and experience to guide our nation forward at this historic moment. So I am very proud to endorse John McCain for the presidency for the United States of America. Few men walking among us have sacrificed so much in the cause of human freedom, and I am happy to help this remarkable patriot carry our Party's banner forward."

John McCain made the following statement thanking President Bush for his endorsement:

"Thank you very much, Mr. President. I am deeply honored by your support and your friendship. I am deeply appreciative of the enormous service that President Bush and Barbara and the entire family have rendered to this country. President Bush's service to this country goes back to World War II. That is where President Bush and I have something in common -- actually two things in common. One is that we were both naval aviators. The other is that we were both shot down. I will not pursue that line of conversation any further except to say that I am very proud to be in the presence of President and Barbara Bush anywhere at any time -- two people who have devoted their lives to the service of this country.

"I believe that his endorsement and sign of support honors me. I also think it is very helpful in continuing our effort to unite our Party. In the conversations I had with President Bush, he made it very clear that we, as a Party, must unite and move forward and attract, not only members of our own party, but independents and the so-called Reagan Democrats. I think that President Bush's endorsement today honors me. I believe it will help us enormously in that that process of uniting our party and moving forward. Again, I have had the pleasure of knowing and watching President Bush for many, many years. He served this country as head of the CIA, as the Chairman of our Party, as Vice President, and as President. There are very few Americans I know who have served with more honor and dignity, and I am honored to have his support. And President Bush and Barbara, I can assure you that Cindy and I will do everything we can to make sure that you are proud and that your support of our candidacy will be something that you can look back on as having been the right thing to do. I am very honored."

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Endorses John McCain For President

THE MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL ENDORSES JOHN MCCAIN FOR PRESIDENT

"[A]t some point, voters do have to choose, and that choice seems quite clear. We recommend Arizona Sen. John McCain ... His torturous captivity as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam provides a powerful and stirring tale of one man's fidelity to duty and love of country. To many, this alone might commend him for higher office. However, his public service afterward also compels a vote for McCain in our state's open primary. As a U.S. senator, he has been - despite rhetoric to the contrary - a dependable conservative voice." -- The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Excerpts From "McCain: Principles Count"

The Arizona senator's principles have selectively guided him to courageous stands and demonstrated an ability to transcend both party and ideology.

By staying in a race that the numbers say he cannot win, Mike Huckabee, former governor of Arkansas, is offering Wisconsin's primary voters a choice.

He is quite correct in resisting party pressure to step aside. An early coronation might satisfy the party pooh-bahs but is not a worthy substitute for a well-argued and contested election - the latter better serving the electorate. These are points Huckabee himself makes.

But at some point, voters do have to choose, and that choice seems quite clear. We recommend Arizona Sen. John McCain in Wisconsin's GOP primary on Tuesday.

Texas Newspapers Endorse John McCain For President

TEXAS NEWSPAPERS ENDORSE JOHN MCCAIN FOR PRESIDENT

The Houston Chronicle and the Corpus Christi Caller-Times Endorse John McCain

"Criticism from talk show hosts and other commentators that McCain is not sufficiently conservative to lead the party is baseless and absurd. McCain opposes the right to choose abortion; he is a hawk on Iraq; his long voting record consistently matches mainstream conservative thought; he opposes changing the Constitution for trivial reasons. ... Of all the candidates who sought the GOP presidential nomination this year, McCain is the most experienced and stands the best chance to attract the swing voters he needs to keep the White House in his party's control." -- Houston Chronicle

"For Republican voters, there is really only one plausible candidate -- John McCain. And the Republican Party is lucky that McCain will be the nominee. ... [M]cCain gives the party a strong chance. This is no time for Republicans to be booing the one candidate who has broad enough appeal to take them down the road to victory in November." -- Corpus Christi Caller-Times
