Senator Sam Brownback Endorses John McCain For President

SENATOR SAM BROWNBACK ENDORSES JOHN MCCAIN FOR PRESIDENT

ARLINGTON, VA -- Today in Iowa, Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) endorsed John McCain for President of the United States. Senator Brownback will serve as a General Co-Chair of the campaign as well as Chair of the newly formed McCain Judicial Advisory Team. Senator Brownback will join John McCain in a campaign swing today through Iowa and Michigan, making stops in Dubuque, Des Moines, Sioux City and Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Senator Brownback issued the following statement on his endorsement of John McCain:

"Today I am proud to endorse my friend and a true American hero, John McCain, for President of the United States. While I respect all of the Republicans running for president this year, John McCain is the only candidate who can rally the Reagan coalition of conservatives, Independents, and conservative Democrats needed to defeat Hillary Clinton or any other Democrat in the general election next year. John McCain has spent a lifetime standing up for human rights around the world, including a consistent 24-year pro-life record of protecting the rights of the unborn. John McCain alone has the courage, leadership and character to lead our party to victory in 2008 while keeping faith with our most cherished values -- life, faith and family."

John McCain issued the following statement accepting Senator Brownback's endorsement:

"I am deeply honored to receive the support of my friend Senator Sam Brownback. Sam Brownback is a man of faith and compassion whose integrity and unwavering commitment to protecting the dignity of human life, both born and unborn, has been an inspiration to me. We Republicans must stand firm in our deepest principles to rally the conservative Reagan coalition and win a great victory next November. Sam Brownback's counsel and friendship will be invaluable as we work to achieve this worthy goal, and I thank him for his support."

Press Conference Transcript: Senator Sam Brownback Ends Presidential Bid

Press Conference Transcript: Senator Sam Brownback Ends Presidential Bid

The following is a transcript from Senator Sam Brownback’s speech on Friday, October 19th in Topeka, Kansas when he announced he is ending his presidential bid:

October 19, 2007
Topeka, Kansas

Today I am ending my candidacy for the 2008 Republican nomination for President.

I do so with great love for my country but the recognition that my yellow brick to the White House just cam up short this time.

It has been a fabulous journey for me and my family. So many people have helped us. My faith in the American people has grown. We are a blessed nation with a special mission.

Campaigns are about the future. I believe the person and the Party that offers the most hope and ideas for the future wins. We put forward ideas like a war on cancer, an optional flat tax, a three-state solution in Iraq, a return to family and a view that every human life, everywhere and at every stage is sacred, beautiful, and created in the image of God.

Our ideas haven’t won yet, but neither will they be forgotten. Perhaps they were for too far into the future, yet they remain ideals for an idealistic people.

I love especially the many young people that joined our effort. They are the future and on their idealism and faith, America will remain the “shining city on a hill.”

I leave this stage a better man and hopefully America a better place. I am amazed that a nation so powerful could allow the son of a Kansas farmer to even dream that he could lead it.

To my fellow Kansans, I thank you for the privilege of representing you in the US Senate. I am sorry and I apologize that this run for President has caused me to miss votes. I am back now and look forward to working with all of you to build a stronger Kansas.

Finally, I lament that campaigns too often focus on problems and never enough on how great a nation this is. We are the most powerful nation in the history of mankind…where we are today. And to whom much is given, much is required. Let us move forward humbled by how blessed we are and resolved that our best days are yet ahead.

Thank you and God bless.

Brownback Closes Solid Third Quarter, Carries No Campaign Debt

Brownback Closes Solid Third Quarter, Carries No Campaign Debt
Eligible for at least $2.1 million in FEC matching funds

DES MOINES – The Brownback for President campaign, which carries no debt, raised $925,745.22 in the third quarter of 2007 and is eligible for at least $2.1 million in federal matching funds. To date the campaign has total receipts of just over $4.2 million.

"With a crowded field and an entire month during which Senator Brownback campaigned in Iowa without holding fundraising events, we are pleased with the level of support for Senator Brownback's message," said John Rankin, spokesman for Brownback for President. "We have always expected to run a grassroots campaign and to make the most of limited resources. The option of over $2 million in federal matching funds would provide additional support as we move forward."

Brownback Statement On GOP Debate

Brownback Articulates Principled and Balanced Conservative Vision
Lays Out Solutions for Rebuilding the Family, Iraq, Tax Cuts, Foreign Policy

DURHAM, NH - United States Senator and Republican presidential candidate Sam Brownback presented a balanced and principled conservative agenda in this evening's debate. This performance underscores Brownback's position of uniting the Republican Party's social and fiscal conservative wings.

Brownback spoke forcefully about the critical issues facing our nation:

On rebuilding the family: "I'm running saying that the lead thing we need to do is rebuild the family in this country. And I think we need to be clear about our efforts and willingness to do that. ... We shouldn't walk away from family values. And if we're going to solve problems of education, crime, what's taking place in some of our areas where we're not getting the growth, we've got to rebuild the family."

On supporting a constitutional amendment defending marriage as a man and a woman: "When you do these vast, social experiments -- and that's what this is, when you redefine marriage -- it's a vast, social experiment. They're not done in isolation.  They impact the rest of the culture around you.  When you take the sacredness out of marriage, you will drive the marriage rates down."

On committing to a durable solution in Iraq: "You've got the military that has made a number of progressive steps, particularly in the west -- Al Anbar Province -- they've made progress. But we don't have a political solution on the ground that works in Iraq. Iraq is less a country than it is three groups held together by exterior forces. It's the Kurds in the north, the Sunni in the west, the Shia in the south, and a mixed city in Baghdad... I think we need to recognize that reality. We ought to now push for establishment of a Sunni state in the West. Still one country -- still one country, but separate states. That's a political solution that you can take advantage of what the military has done on the ground. That's what we need to do to move forward now."

On keeping taxes low, protecting free enterprise and his decision to sign the 'No New Tax' pledge: "I think it's not just a pledge to a group that has it.  I think it's a pledge to the American public. We're already taxed to the max. In most states, you're working until about the middle of May to pay your taxes.  It is too long. You're working too much for the government, and you need to be working more for yourself. And I've pushed these topics based on I think we need to grow the economy, plus I'd like to be able to see families keep more of their money so that possibly maybe one of them doesn't have to go to work instead of both having to go to work, if more families could keep more of their money instead of it going to the government."

On the United States leadership in confronting Iran: "You have to also recognize that the founder of the current Iranian regime, Ayatollah Khomeini, said, if we destroy Israel, Allah will reward us. That was his stated policy. That is something that he stated. I think you have to take the factual setting of what you put forward, take it to the American public and to the Congress, and ask for the authority to use military force for two purposes. Number one purpose is to go after the military forces being developed on the ground and trained on the ground in Iran to attack our people in Iraq, and number two, towards the nuclear weapons development program that the Iranians are working on."

Brownback's balanced conservative approach to the challenges facing our nation is the formula for Republican victory in 2008.

The Brownback campaign received 2,192 votes and spent approximately $325,000 on the Straw Poll.

Brownback Speaks At Ames Straw Poll

Brownback Speaks at Ames Straw Poll
Calls to rebuild the family, renew the culture and revive the economy

AMES, Iowa – U.S. Senator Sam Brownback, Republican candidate for president, will speak today at the Ames Straw Poll at approximately 3:15 p.m. in the Hilton Coliseum.

The full text of his remarks, as prepared for delivery, are included below:

First, I want to thank the Republican Party of Iowa for putting together this wonderful event. In a very real way, the race for the White House in 2008 begins in Iowa and begins here today in Ames. You, the people of Iowa, know that elections and the future of our country are based on principles not on personalities.

Today, here in Ames, I have a message of hope. You, the people of Iowa, will send a message to our party and to our country: we win when we stand on principle not when we abandon it. Because of America's commitment to principles, the principles I carry can flourish. And the son of a Kansas farmer can still grow up to be President.

I want to make one point with this speech. We must rebuild our families, renew our culture and revive our economy if we are to sustain and grow ourselves during this long-term battle we are in with militant Islamists.

The first principle, upon which our entire vision is based, is the dignity of each and every human life. Every person, everywhere, is a beautiful, precious, unique, child of a loving God. It is message that will unite us and a message that we should not shy away from.

It is the America we all know is possible. It is the America where the strong protect the weak. It means first that we are willing to fight for the child in the womb, the most vulnerable among us. We know that America is better than abortion on demand. You know, as I do, that 45 million children killed since Roe v. Wade is a sin not worthy of this great land.

You know that of course it does not end there. Our concern for the dignity of each and every human life means that we fight also for the child in Darfur. we fight for the woman in poverty and the man in prison. We are willing to fight for every life, everywhere.

We are pro-life and whole-life. That is the vision of our party and our people. It is a vision that is expansive and inclusive, and it is the foundation of my vision for America.

We also need to revive our economy. I am pro-growth. As president, I am committed to grow the economy, save social security, and provide more choices and coverage in health care.

I have never voted for a tax increase, and I would certainly never sign one. I think we're taxed to the max. We need to balance the budget and control spending, not raise taxes.

We should have a commission report on wasteful government spending every year and then require a vote of Congress whether to eliminate the whole package or not, deal or no deal.

We need a different taxation system. I support an optional flat tax, that lets the people choose to pay one low, flat rate between 15 to 20 percent or stay in the current system if you want.

These ideas will provide growth!

The strength of America is not in its government, but in the goodness of its people. The American people are made strong by strong families. We need more and stronger families in this country. Families are the leading place where we learn about character and values and virtue.

Yet, 36 percent of our children are born out of wedlock. The number is 56 percent in Washington, DC. It is too high.

You can raise a good child in a single parent environment and we should celebrate when it happens, but it is more difficult. The best place to raise a child is between a Mom and a Dad bonded together for life. We know this from all the social data, and we know it in our heart.

If you have weak families, more government will be created to make up for the loss of family. But the government has stiff arms and a cold heart. Woe to the person hugged by the government.

The best way to reduce poverty in America is to have stronger families!

The best way to reduce crime in America is to have stronger families!

The best way to improve education in America is to have stronger families!

As president, I will rebuild the American family!

Make no mistake: we need to invest in our schools, in law enforcement and prison reform. But unless we address the fundamental problem of the breakdown of the family, we are only taking a band-aid approach addressing the symptoms and not the problem itself.

In Iraq, our military is performing brilliantly. We will set no timetables to leave. A timetable is a timetable to defeat. But we also need to push aggressively a political solution in Iraq. I have put forward a bipartisan resolution for a federalized system in Iraq: three states, one country, a loose confederation with Baghdad as the federal city and a way of sharing oil revenue. Iraq is really more three groups, Kurds, Sunnis, and Shias, held together by exterior forces than anything else. We need a political solution to match our military commitment. We must have a "political surge" which is the only way to reach a long-term, durable solution to this difficult conflict.

Furthermore, we need to be energy secure at home. We have got to rely more on the Midwest for our energy than the Middle East. We must expand our use of ethanol, upping our blends of ethanol in gasoline.

Ensuring our nation's security also means ensuring the security of our borders. We need to fund and build a fence on our border, and we need do more enforcement at the work site.

We also need to encourage faith, not litigate it out of existence! We should be able to say "one nation under God" in our flag salute without someone threatening to sue us. Faith is a good thing, not a bad thing.

I don't know how you understand America without understanding faith. Study the Founders, they were people of faith. Abraham Lincoln was a man of faith. Martin Luther King was a man of faith. Faith is what powered them.

I met Mother Teresa once, just months before she died. As I put her in her car to leave, she grabbed my hand, stared me in the eyes and said three words, four times: "All for Jesus, All for Jesus." Hers was a simple faith that worked through her to help millions.

Part of being a strong nation is to be a rule of law nation. I am committed to appoint strict constructionist judges who will stand by the Constitution, not rewrite it. I want to be the president to appoint the justice who will provide that fifth vote, to overturn Roe vs. Wade and end this night of wrong.

America is best when she is looking up. Let us lift our heads up and see how blessed we are. We are a great land of many people, diverse, beautiful, full of hope.

Hope for the future is inherently part of who we are. Let us never lose our hopefulness, nor our goodness. Let us always practice justice and righteousness. With goodness the guide for our greatness, let's be the "shining city on a hill."
