Boston, MA – Mitt Romney today announced the support of Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels.

Governor Daniels Was Elected As The 49th Governor Of Indiana In 2004. Governor Daniels was reelected in 2008 and received the most votes for a statewide official in Indiana history. Prior to his election, Governor Daniels served as the Director of the Office of Management and Budget under President George W. Bush, CEO of the Hudson Institute, President of Eli Lilly and Company's North American Pharmaceutical Operations, Chief of Staff to Senator Dick Lugar, and Senior Advisor to President Ronald Reagan.

Over the last year and a half, a large and diverse group of people have suggested to me an idea that I never otherwise would have considered, that I run for President. I’ve asked for time to think it over carefully, but these good people have been very patient and I owe them an answer.
 
The answer is that I will not be a candidate. What could have been a complicated decision was in the end very simple: on matters affecting us all, our family constitution gives a veto to the women’s caucus, and there is no override provision. Simply put, I find myself caught between two duties. I love my country; I love my family more.
 
I am deeply concerned, for the first time in my life, about the future of our Republic. In the next few years Americans will decide two basic sets of questions: Who’s in charge here? Should the public sector protect and promote the private sector or dominate and direct it? Does the government work for the people or vice versa?
 
And, are we Americans still the kind of people who can successfully govern ourselves, discipline ourselves financially, put the future and our children’s interests ahead of the present and our own?
 
I am confident that the answers will reaffirm the liberty and vitality of our nation, and hope to play some small part in proving that view true.

NASHVILLE, TN – The 35th Annual Tennessee Republican Party Statesmen’s Dinner will be held on Friday, July 15th at the Nashville Convention Center. Headlining this year’s event is Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels.

“Governor Daniels has been a true leader in his state and nationally. He is a serious voice in getting our country’s fiscal and economic house in order and we welcome him to Tennessee,” said Tennessee Republican Party Chairman Chris Devaney.

Mitchell E. Daniels Jr. was elected as the 49th Governor of the State of Indiana in 2004, in his first bid for any elected office. During his first term, Governor Daniels spearheaded a host of reforms aimed at improving the performance of state government. These changes and a strong emphasis on performance measurement have led to many state agencies, including the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Department of Child Services, and Department of Correction, winning national awards.

Governor Daniels was re-elected in 2008 to a second and final term, receiving more votes than any candidate for any public office in the state’s history.

Daniels earned a bachelor’s degree from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University in 1971 and his law degree from Georgetown University in 1979.

Governor Daniels gave the keynote speech Friday night at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference, urging attendees to be bold, specific and welcoming to all who might support the actions necessary to save the nation from its debt and economic danger.

"If freedom's best friends cannot unify around a realistic, actionable program of fundamental change, one that attracts and persuades a broad majority of our fellow citizens, big change will not come."

He described a new "red menace," the nation's debt, and offered suggestions to save the Republic:

"If a foreign power advanced an army to the border of our land, everyone in this room would drop everything and look for a way to help.  We would set aside all other agendas and disputes as secondary, and go to the ramparts until the threat was repelled.  That is what those of us here, and every possible ally we can persuade to join us, are now called to do.  It is our generational assignment. It is the mission of our era.  Forgive the pun when I call it our "raison debt."

And spoke of a limited government that works for the benefit of private life:

"We believe it wrong ever to take a dollar from a free citizen without a very necessary public purpose, because each such taking diminishes the freedom to spend that dollar as its owner would prefer.  When we do find it necessary, we feel a profound duty to use that dollar as carefully and effectively as possible, else we should never have taken it at all." 

He asked Americans to join together to sustain change:

"All great enterprises have a pearl of faith at their core, and this must be ours:  that Americans are still a people born to liberty. That they retain the capacity for self-government. That, addressed as free-born, autonomous men and women of God-given dignity, they will rise yet again to drive back a mortal enemy."
