Will Address Health Care and Other Challenges

Washington, DC – Newt Gingrich will begin his 17-city tour of Iowa in Dubuque where he will speak to the Kiwanis Club.  Gingrich will address the challenges facing our nation and why he has decided to run for president.

Specifically, Gingrich will address health care and his vision for a 21st century intelligent health system that is centered on the patient, innovation rich and seeks to provide the best quality care with the greatest choices at the lowest cost.

Gingrich will emphasize his opposition to a federal individual mandate for health insurance as imposed by the Obama administration.  He will also reiterate his call for the complete repeal of Obamacare.  But he will also attest, as most Americans would, that everyone must take personal responsibility for their own health care costs.

Gingrich pointed to the need to redesign a system that responds to downward cost pressures.  He wants to create a system where people have access to quality outcome information, know the real costs and can choose their providers based on that knowledge.  That would create a dynamic where providers compete to provide the best care at the lowest cost.

“The current system does not and cannot do that,” Gingrich said.  “It has no incentives to provide better care or to lower costs.  Consumers have little information on which to base their health care decisions because they have no data on who provides the best care and what the cost is.”

Gingrich believes that the current system can only lead to high costs, decreased access and lower quality care. Gingrich will discuss how to create a better system that is centered on the patient putting them in the driver’s seat with their doctor to make informed health decisions.

Governor Mike Huckabee emerged in 2008 as a new star for the Republican Party and the conservative movement.  Over the last 3 years he has used his gifts to create a popular Fox News TV show, produce an amazingly successful radio commentary, write best-selling books, and deliver thought provoking speeches.  All have increased his stature and his influence.

Had Governor Huckabee decided to run, there is no question he would have been a frontrunner in the 2012 campaign for president.  He has achieved that prominence without a campaign simply based on his personal appeal and the attractiveness of his views and his character.

His statement tonight emphasized the spiritual dimension of his life and his decision process.  It is a wonderful example for all Americans of someone trying to do the right thing.

Gingrich to Outline Bold Job Creation Plan at Georgia Republican Convention

Macon, GA – Newt Gingrich, speaking to the Georgia Republican Party Convention, will outline a bold job creation plan to win the future, one fundamentally different than the “too little-too late” big government policies of the Obama administration.

Gingrich will point out that the average length of recession since World War II has lasted just ten months and that historically, the worse the downturn, the stronger the recovery.  Yet forty months after the recession started, we are still at 9% unemployment (16% counting the underemployed), the longest stretch of such high unemployment since the Great Depression.

“Part of what makes America exceptional is a dynamic, entrepreneurial spirit that has made the American economy the most resilient in the world.  But big government taxes, regulations and bureaucracies are holding us back,” said Gingrich.

“With the right pro-growth policies we can get the right results.  America can once again be the number one place on the planet to invest and create jobs,” Gingrich added.

Gingrich represented Georgia’s 6th Congressional district for 20 years and helped build the Georgia Republican Party from a minority in state and federal office representation to the majority it is today.  He has been active in shaping Georgia Republican Party politics for over forty years.

“I look forward to being with my many friends today in Macon,” said Gingrich.

Gingrich will also criticized President Obama as a “permanent candidate” more interested in scoring political points than getting things done.

“From jobs, to the deficit, to our broken immigration system, our country faces real challenges that will require us to come together as Americans,” said Gingrich.  “But President Obama has made it clear he is more interested in distorting Republican ideas and scaring Americans than actually solving problems.”

The Gingrich Jobs and Prosperity Plan includes:

• Stop the 2013 tax increases to promote stability in the economy. Job creation moved from stagnant to improving in the three months after Congress extended tax relief for two years. We should continue what has worked by making the rates permanent.
• Make the United States the most desirable location for new business investment through a bold series of tax cuts, including: Eliminating the capital gains tax to make American entrepreneurs more competitive against those in other countries; Dramatically reducing the corporate income tax (the highest in the world) to 12.5%; Allowing for 100% expensing of new equipment to spur innovation and American manufacturing; Ending the death tax permanently.
• Move toward an optional flat tax of 15% that would allow Americans the freedom to choose to file their taxes on a postcard, saving hundreds of billions in unnecessary costs each year.
• Strengthen the dollar by returning to the Reagan-era monetary policies that stopped runaway inflation and reforming the Federal Reserve to promote transparency.
• Remove obstacles to job creation imposed by destructive and ineffective regulations, programs and bureaucracies. Steps include: Repealing the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, which did nothing to prevent the financial crisis and is holding companies back from making new investments in the U.S; Repealing the Community Reinvestment Act, the abuse of which helped cause the financial crisis; Breaking up Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, moving their smaller successors off government guarantees and into the free market; Replacing the Environmental Protection Agency with an Environmental Solutions Agency that works collaboratively with local government and industry to achieve better results; and Modernizing the Food and Drug Administration  to get lifesaving medicines and technologies to patients faster.
• Implement an American energy policy that removes obstacles to responsible energy development and creates jobs in the United States.
• Balance the budget by growing the economy, controlling spending, implementing money saving reforms, and replacing destructive policies and regulatory agencies with new approaches.
• Repeal and replace Obamacare with a pro-jobs, pro-responsibility health plan that puts doctors and patients in charge of health decisions instead of bureaucrats.
• Fundamental reform of entitlement programs with the advice and help of the American people.

DES MOINES, IOWA – After announcing nationally his intentions to be a candidate for President of the United States, former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich unveiled key members of his 2012 Iowa Caucus campaign team.

Iowa House Majority Leader Linda Upmeyer (R-Garner) will serve as the campaign’s chairwoman in the “first-in-the-nation” caucuses.  Upmeyer, a long-time supporter of Gingrich, is the first woman ever elected to the post of Majority Leader in the Iowa House.

“Newt is a friend, a true conservative, and I believe his message for America’s future will resonate with all Iowa families,” said Upmeyer.  “I’m excited for the chance to help elect him to the presidency.  He has a clear vision to sustain our economic future…to put our families and neighborhoods first.”

Iowa House Speaker Pro Tempore Jeff Kaufmann (R-Wilton) has also announced his support for Gingrich 2012, and will serve the campaign as a senior policy advisor on Iowa related issues such as rural economies, agriculture and energy.

“Mr. Gingrich has consistently demonstrated he is a man of fresh ideas; he’s willing to ‘think outside of the box’ for ways to tackle the issues that are important to Iowans,” said Kaufmann, who has a Ph.D. in History from the University of Iowa, and serves as a department chair and professor at Muscatine (Iowa) Community College.  “Our economy is reeling, our national debt is skyrocketing, healthcare is a mess, and no one is sure what our foreign policy is under the Obama administration.  Newt Gingrich has the experience as both a public servant and businessman, and the courage to get America back on track”.

Gingrich has also tapped longtime GOP activist and attorney Craig Schoenfeld to serve as the executive director of his Iowa campaign.  Schoenfeld was a key member of the Bush 2000 Iowa caucus campaign, and directed the former President’s general election efforts in Iowa in 2000.  He served as executive director for New York Governor George Pataki’s political action committee FreedomPAC in 2006 as the governor explored a possible 2008 bid for the White House.

“I’ve been an admirer of the Speaker for almost 20 years,” said Schoenfeld.  “He is an American leader.  He has a strong record on economic prosperity, welfare reform and healthcare.  He will not be afraid to lead during times of global crisis.  He has an unparalleled vision to restore America as the greatest country in the world.”

Gingrich also announced other key individuals of his Iowa campaign, who will be charged with helping him enlist the necessary volunteers and supporters needed for a strong showing in the February, 2012 caucuses.

Katie Koberg, former Vice President of the influential conservative group Iowans for Tax Relief, will serve as the Iowa campaign’s deputy director.  Will Rogers, the immediate past co-chairman of the Polk County Republican Party and former campaign manager for Congressman Tom Latham (R-IA4), will assist in directing the campaign’s grassroots organization.

Gingrich plans an extensive tour across Iowa next week, beginning with stops in Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Des Moines and Mason City on May 16th and 17th.  He will return a few days later, planning visits from Eastern to Western Iowa May 19th through the 21st.

DES MOINES, IOWA – On the heels of announcing his intentions to be a candidate for President of the United States, former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich announced his extensive plans to travel across Iowa, home of the first-in-the-nation presidential caucuses, next week.

Gingrich will spend five days traveling the state next week, beginning with stops in Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, and Des Moines on Monday, May 16th, and an early morning visit to Mason City on Tuesday, May 17th.  He returns on Thursday, May 19th to Waterloo, traveling through central and western Iowa, before wrapping up his visit on Saturday, May 21st in the northwest Iowa communities of Orange City and Sheldon.

During his travels, Gingrich will be meeting with Republican activists, listening to Iowa voters, and sharing his vision for America.  Gingrich will also be delivering keynote speeches in Dubuque, Sioux City and Ida County.

"I’m Newt Gingrich and I’m announcing my candidacy for President of the United States because I believe we can return America to hope and opportunity, to full employment, to real security, to an American energy program, to a balanced budget.

I worked with President Ronald Reagan in a very difficult period.  We got jobs created again, Americans proud of America, and the Soviet Union disappeared.

As Speaker of the House, I worked to reform welfare, balance the budget, control spending, to cut taxes to create economic growth – unemployment came down from 5.6% to under 4.  For four years we balanced the budget and paid off $405 billion in debt.

We’ve done it before, we can do it again.

I want your help because no one person from the oval office can get this done.  We Americas are going to have to talk together, work together, find solutions together, and insist on imposing those solutions on those who don’t want to change.

There are some people who don’t mind if America becomes a wreck so long as they dominate the wreckage.  But you and I know better.

We owe it to our children, our grandchildren, our country and frankly to ourselves.  So let’s get together, look reality in the face, tell the truth, make the tough choices and get the job done.

There’s a much better American future ahead: with more jobs, more prosperity, a better health system, longer lives, greater independent living, in a country that is decentralized under the 10th Amendment, with power once again back with the American people and way from the Washington bureaucracies.

No one person can accomplish this.  It can’t be done from the oval office.  We have to work together.  We Americans have to get it done.
