The presidential race in the battleground state of Iowa remains a near tie.
 
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Iowa Voters finds Mitt Romney with 46% support to President Obama’s 44%. Five percent (5%) prefer another candidate in the race, and six percent (6%) are undecided.
 
In early June, it was Romney 47%, Obama 46%. Iowa remains a Toss-Up in the Rasmussen Reports Electoral College Projections. Obama carried the state over Republican John McCain 54% to 44% in the 2008 election.
 
Nationally, Romney has posted a 47% to 43% lead over Obama for the past two days in the daily Presidential Tracking Poll.
 
Fifty-six percent (56%) of voters in Iowa favor repeal of the president’s national health care law, while 39% are opposed. This includes 43% who Strongly Favor repeal and 28% who Strongly Oppose it. This is slightly higher support for repeal than is found nationally.
 
Eighty-seven percent (87%) of the larger group that Strongly Favors repeal support Romney. Obama gets 95% of the vote from those Strongly Opposed to repeal.
 
Eleven percent (11%) of all voters in the state rate the economy as good or excellent, while 49% describe it as poor. Twenty-nine percent (29%) think the economy is getting better, but 42% say it’s getting worse. Fifty-seven percent (57%) believe the U.S. economy is in a recession. Twenty-five percent (25%) disagree.
 
Like voters nationally, voters in Iowa have slightly more confidence in Romney when it comes to the economy. If Romney is elected and Republicans control Congress, 40% of Iowa voters say the economy will get better, while 35% believe it will get worse. If Obama is reelected and Democrats take full control of Congress, 34% expect the economy to improve, but 44% think it will get worse.
 
The survey of 500 Likely Voters in Iowa was conducted on August 8, 2012 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.
 
Sixty-eight percent (68%) of voters in Iowa regard Romney as at least as ethical as most politicians. Sixty-three percent (63%) say the same of Obama.
 
Echoing national trends, Romney leads among male voters in the state, while the president is ahead among female voters. Voters under 40 give the edge to Obama; their elders prefer the GOP challenger.
 
Romney holds a slight five-point lead among voters not affiliated with either of the major political parties.
 
Fifty percent (50%) of all Iowa voters have a favorable opinion of Romney, while 49% regard him unfavorably. This includes 20% with a Very Favorable view and 31% with a Very Unfavorable one.
 
Forty-eight percent (48%) approve of Obama’s job performance as president, but slightly more (51%) disapprove. These findings include 30% who Strongly Approve of the job he is doing and 42% who Strongly Disapprove, a bit better that his job approval ratings nationally.

Tampa Bay area students showcase creativity, talent and patriotism in their submissions

TAMPA, Fla. - Erin Fesler, a freshman at Steinbrenner High School in Lutz, Florida, has been selected as the first place winner of the 2012 Republican National Convention's "Elephants on Parade" art competition.

The competition was open to middle and high school students throughout the Tampa Bay area. Participants were asked to submit a project that answered the question: "What does being an American mean to me?"

Fesler painted "Perseverance, Innovation, Sacrifice, Liberty, Unity and Strength" using oil paints on canvas. She says each element of the work - which incorporates an American bald eagle, a Native American, the Statue of Liberty, a NASA spacecraft, the United States Capitol building, an American flag and Arlington National Cemetery -represents a unique facet of our country's identity. As part of her prize, the painting will be displayed in the main convention venue, the Tampa Bay Times Forum, during convention week.

"I started painting about two years ago and I am interested in politics. I am taking an American Government class and it's teaching me a lot about the political system and how it all works," Fesler explained. "[The convention] is just amazing; it's such an honor to be here. It just furthers my understanding of everything I am learning.

Fesler, along with four other finalists, will have the opportunity to tour the Times Forum and the Tampa Convention Center, where an expected 15,000 credentialed media will be based for the convention.

"I commend Erin on her artistic accomplishment in this contest, as well as her desire to learn about the American government system," said convention CEO William Harris. "This great country will succeed on the shoulders of the next generation, including Erin and her peers."
