Update on President Obama’s Campaign Events in Virginia and Colorado

CHICAGO -- Due to Hurricane Sandy, President Obama's campaign events in Prince William County, Virginia on Monday and in Colorado Springs, Colorado on Tuesday have been cancelled. As the White House announced earlier this evening, the President is being regularly updated on the storm and ongoing preparations, and he has directed his team to continue to bring all available resources to bear as state and local partners continue to prepare for the storm.

Additional changes to the President’s schedule will be announced as warranted.

* Romney's chameleon tendencies -- coupled with an economic plan that lacks credibility -- have left us with too many doubts about how he would lead the nation.

* Obamacare will make coverage more affordable for millions. Protections for adults with preexisting conditions will take effect in 2014, as will state health care exchanges to enhance competition and transparency for those who buy on the individual market. Payment reform measures are designed to rein in costs by rewarding providers for results, not procedures.

* Obama deserves his best marks in foreign policy. Helped by his astute choice of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the administration's balanced, cooperative approach has repaired the country's image with its allies. The president ended the war in Iraq and started winding down the one in Afghanistan. He targeted Al-Qaida's leadership, above all bringing justice to Osama bin Laden.

* Romney's postconvention shift from the neoconservative right to near the center on foreign policy, most notably during last week's debate, only validates the administration's economic sanctions against Iran and its prudent decision not to deploy troops in Syria.

* The moderate Romney who reemerged after the convention is more congenial than the Tea Party fellow traveler who won nomination. But who can be certain which Romney will appear next? How can any American be sure where he stands on gay rights, immigration, climate change, reproductive rights and investment in education?

* Romney's promise to lead the charge to repeal the Affordable Care Act is inconsistent with his work as governor of Massachusetts. More troubling, he's failed to articulate a viable alternative to Obamacare. And, as on so many issues, as Election Day nears Romney has tempered his criticism, suggesting that insuring every child in Massachusetts wasn't such a bad idea after all.

* You would think that Romney, with his business smarts, would offer a coherent vision for the nation's budget challenges. Instead, he's conjured a magical economic plan with deep tax cuts and increased military spending. Romney would eliminate tax deductions to offset lost revenue, but he refuses to provide details. It's simply not credible.

Ten months ago this newspaper endorsed former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for the Republican nomination for president. An overarching consideration was which of the party’s candidates could we see occupying the White House, and there was no question that Romney was qualified for the job.

Now, in the closing days of the general election campaign, the question is which of the two contenders deserves to be the next president of the United States.

Both President Barack Obama and Governor Romney are superbly qualified. Both are graduates of the Harvard University Law School who have distinguished themselves in government, in public service and in private life. Both are devoted husbands and fathers.

…

Our discussion repeatedly circled back to the nation’s single most important challenge: pulling the economy out of the doldrums, getting more Americans back in the workforce in meaningful jobs with promising futures, and getting the federal government on a track to balance the budget in a bipartisan manner that the country demands.

Which candidate could forge the compromises in Congress to achieve these goals? When the question is framed in those terms, Mitt Romney emerges the stronger candidate.

The former governor and business executive has a strong record of achievement in both the private and the public sectors. He was an accomplished governor in a liberal state. He founded and ran a successful business that turned around failing companies. He successfully managed the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Romney has made rebuilding the economy his No. 1 campaign priority — and rightly so.

The president’s best efforts to resuscitate the stumbling economy have fallen short. Nothing indicates it would change with a second term in the White House.

Consumers must feel more confident about their own economic futures to begin spending on the products and services that power the economy. A renewed sense of confidence will spark renewed investment by American companies. Industry will return to full production and hiring will begin again.

That should come with Mitt Romney in the White House.

Throughout the campaign, he has expressed faith in the private sector to fuel a more robust economic recovery if it has more confidence that the federal government will not be an obstacle. Romney has a strategy for job growth through tax and regulatory relief for small businesses, encouraging all forms of domestic energy production, education that prepares graduates with job skills, expanding foreign trade and reducing the burden of federal deficits.

That formula, coupled with his business acumen, should unlock this nation’s economic potential.

Voters should give Mitt Romney a chance to correct the nation’s fiscal course and to implode the partisan gridlock that has shackled Washington and the rest of America — with the understanding that he would face the same assessment in four years if he does not succeed.

When the Press-Citizen Editorial Board endorsed Barack Obama for president in 2008, we had a pretty good sense of the type of president he would be:

• Someone who — for good or ill — would try to reach out and look for compromise across the aisle.

• Someone who could give a stirring speech, but who too often adopted a professorial tone and started stepping on his tongue when preaching to those not already in the choir.

• Someone who inevitably would disappoint us by breaking some campaign promises that we strongly agreed with (such his promises to hold only open-door meetings about health care reform) and keeping some promises that we strongly disagreed with.

We encourage our readers to re-elect Obama, but we also urge them — as early as the day after the election — to continue to pressure him and his administration to keep moving forward.
