What They Are Saying: Iowans Talk About Governor Pawlenty's Record of Results Tour
“‘I’m a typical cynic of government,’ Blake said, but when Pawlenty decided to run, she ‘got excited’ about his presidency. ‘I know he can be a great president because he’s used to facing many obstacles,’ she said. Pam Larson, 65, is retired and lives in Ankeny. Prior to tonight, she wasn’t necessarily a Pawlenty fan, but had started doing research on the candidates…. ‘I think his ideas are pretty close to how I feel,’ Larson said. ‘I was very impressed tonight with his sincerity and he was down to earth.’ Larson said…as of tonight, she will be heading to Ames in a few weeks to vote for Pawlenty in the straw poll.”

“Roger Rowland, 63, of West Des Moines, said he has seen Pawlenty speak several times this summer. The passion Pawlenty showed Wednesday moved him to the top of candidates he’s considering supporting at the straw poll next month, he said. ‘I would say listening to him today his stock goes up in my eye,’ Rowland said. ‘I think he’s improved his ability to really show passion. I think it’s been there, but I think he’s doing a more effective job of showing it.’ Steve Block, 40, of Des Moines said he signed up to support Pawlenty in the straw poll, because of his experience as governor. ‘He’s to the point. He doesn’t sugarcoat a lot of things. I think that’s what the country needs,’ he said.”

“Pawlenty drew an overflow crowd Tuesday afternoon, a strong showing for a candidate who has struggled at times to gain traction in Iowa.”

“John
Kaufmann, 19, of Wilton, said he was inspired by Pawlenty’s life story and speech…‘He’s very honest and strong in his convictions, and even if I don’t agree with him I appreciate that in a candidate,’ Kaufmann said. Kaufmann is convinced enough on Pawlenty’s stance on the issues to travel to Ames in three weeks for the Straw Poll. ‘He absolutely has my vote,’ Kaufmann said.”

“Tiny Searsboro, Iowa, was a political hotbed Saturday. Five presidential campaigns, three official and two unofficial, descended on the town of 155 residents for a gun rights rally, trying to appeal to the overwhelmingly conservative attendees. The event, sponsored by the Iowa Firearms Coalition and NRA, swelled the town’s population to well over 500, despite inclement weather. Tim Pawlenty was the only presidential candidate to speak at the event. Donning an NRA cap, Pawlenty’s brief speech was well received by the crowd.”

“Amateur hockey player and former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty strapped up his skates and hit the ice for a pickup game of hockey at the Metro Ice Sports Facility inUrbandale on Friday. ‘Tee-Paw, Tee-Paw,’ a gaggle of youth hockey players chanted, holding Pawlenty campaign signs as the candidate entered the arena. He wore a navy blue jersey with his campaign insignia and a '12' on the back, the year of his hopeful election. The front of the jersey had “C,” for captain.”

“Matt Kypta, 24, of West Des Moines…did sign up to vote for Pawlenty in the straw poll. ‘I think he’s the best combination of fiscal conservatism and electibility,’ said Kypta. ‘In times like this, if you’re the Republican candidate and you want to win, you’ve got to get the independents to swing back…’”
