List of Iowa Leaders that Endorse Clinton's College Affordability Plan
Following the release of Hillary Clinton's New College Compact, a plan to ensure costs are not a barrier for any student who wishes to attend college and address the rising levels of debt, Iowa elected officials released statements endorsing the proposal. Clinton will return to Iowa on Friday to discuss the New College Compact at a town hall in Dubuque.
"Iowa's college graduates are burdened with more debt on average than others around the country — about $29,370 at graduation compared with $28,400 nationally — and one of the highest default rates in the United States. About a half million Iowans currently owe about $11.8 billion for federal student loans, an amount that has continued to grow, according to the U.S. Department of Education," the Des Moines Register reported earlier this year.
See why Iowans are endorsing Hillary Clinton’s New College Compact:
"Levels of student debt in Iowa are deeply concerning and completely unsustainable," said Iowa Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald. "Hillary Clinton's plan to reduce rates through refinancing, simplify income-based repayment, and crack down on predatory lenders, will make important strides for our students. Iowa is at it's best when we reduce barriers for our young people and no one should be buried in debt just as they're starting their career."
"As a member of the education committee in the Iowa Senate and a representative of one of Iowa's largest college communities, this issue of student debt is paramount and I applaud Hillary Clinton for taking it head on," said Senator Bob Dvorsky. "We need leaders who understand the gravity of this issue and have specific, realistic proposals to get things done for our students. They can't afford anything less."
Under the New College Compact students should never have to take out a loan to pay for tuition at their state’s public university, states will re-invest in college, and innovation that makes a real difference in student outcomes will be rewarded.
"Hillary Clinton's plan to reduce the burden of college debt and college costs is both the right strategy to tackle the problem and fiscally responsible," said State Senator Jeff Danielson whose district includes the University of Northern Iowa. "Hillary's comprehensive and detailed approach is sound public policy and Iowans expect no less. I'm proud to support her and this plan on behalf of the thousands of students I represent at the University of Northern Iowa."
"Hillary Clinton's plan to bring down the rapidly increasing cost of college is right for Iowa and the country," said State Representative Vicki Lensing of Iowa City. "I meet young people every day who want to attend some of our great universities and colleges but are simply too concerned about the costs to believe it's realistic. With Hillary's detailed proposals that promise no debt for tuition, families will be able to get their kids the education they need and deserve."
