Bernie Sanders 2016 Iowa Campaign Announces Environmental Leadership Team
DES MOINES, Iowa -- Bolstered by a new television ad highlighting his opposition to the Bakken crude oil pipeline in Iowa, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign announced their Environmental Leadership Team for the Hawkeye state. The twenty-five member group is spearheaded by former League of Conservation Voters staffers and current members of the Bernie 2016 Iowa campaign team: Shelby Iseler, Adam Kofoed, Justin Huck, Evan Friesen, and Michael Plantenberg.
The team, comprised of activists, scientists and community members, applauded Sanders’ strong vocal opposition to the Keystone XL and Bakken crude oil pipelines and his consistent record of working to counter the devastating effects of climate change.
Sanders first voiced his opposition to the Bakken crude oil pipeline, which would transport up to 570,000 barrels of crude oil daily through 18 Iowa counties, in November. Sanders noted at the time that he was “...opposed to the construction of the Bakken crude oil pipeline because as a nation, our job is to break our addiction to fossil fuels, and not increase our dependence on oil, coal and other carbon pollution sources.” Sanders was the first and remains the only Democratic presidential candidate to oppose the construction of this pipeline.
“Bernie Sanders believes that fossil fuel billionaires' money in our political system poses the greatest threat to solving the climate crisis. Bernie has the most comprehensive plan that both gets the money out of our political system and returns democracy back to the people while also completely addressing the devastating problem of climate change.”
--Mike Carberry, Johnson County Supervisor
“Bernie has laid out a comprehensive plan that both creates green jobs and makes polluters pay. He is committed to protecting public lands from fossil fuel extraction and to blocking unneeded infrastructure like the Bakken oil pipeline. If future generations could endorse Sanders, they would be first in line. I am doing it on their behalf."
--Carolyn Raffensperger, Co-founder, Women’s Congress for Future Generations
“I support Bernie Sanders because he has a high level of integrity that is uncommon in politicians today. He has a long history of fighting for hard-working, middle-class Americans. He also is one of the very few who had the courage to oppose the unjustified invasion of Iraq, and he favors keeping the U.S. out of the sectarian conflict in the Middle East. That is the kind of president we need in today’s world.”
--Dr. Francis Thicke, Soil Scientist, Radiance Dairy
“Senator Bernie Sanders has long opposed the Keystone XL and similar oil infrastructure projects and is the first and only candidate to come out strong against the Bakken Pipeline. That’s why I support Senator Sanders as the next President of the United State because Iowa, our nation, and our future generations are counting on a president that will move us into the future - a future with clean air, water, and thriving communities.”
--Ahna Kruzic, Graduate student, Sustainable Agriculture and Sociology, ISU
“I strongly support Bernie Sanders for President of the United States. The first time I heard him speak in Iowa City last summer, it was clear to me that this man is extraordinary and different from other politicians. He was the first with the courage to tell it like it is regarding our global climate crisis. Everything he stands for is what I believe in and where we need to go as a nation. Without big money, without corporate backers, and without much but his integrity and passion for a just America, he has reshaped the conversation of this election.”
