More California Leaders Announce Kamala Harris Endorsement Ahead of CA Convention

Today, the first day of the California Democratic Party Convention, more California leaders, including Pro Tem Emeritus Kevin de Leon, are endorsing Senator Kamala Harris for President.

In addition, Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, State Treasurer Fiona Ma, Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins and Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia will serve as state co-chairs for the campaign joining Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Governor Gavin Newsom and civil rights leader Dolores Huerta.

“As California’s Senator, a colleague and friend Kamala Harris has long been a formidable leader and force for change,” said de León. “From working together to ensure California is at the forefront of the fight against climate change to standing up for immigrant rights, I can think of no better person to represent the United States on the world stage.”

Yesterday, 33 Democratic members of the California Assembly, including Speaker Anthony Rendon, joined numerous state, local and municipal leaders in backing Harris, including U.S. Representatives Barbara Lee, Ted Lieu, Katie Hill, Julia Brownley, Nanette Barragan and Governor Gavin Newsom, Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis, Secretary of State Alex Padilla, State Treasurer Fiona Ma, Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond and Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara, 22 members of the State Senate Democratic Caucus including President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins, civil rights leader Dolores Huerta, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, San Francisco Mayor London Breed, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg, Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf and Compton Mayor Aja Brown.

WASHINGTON – Bernie 2020 on Friday announced its first slate of hires in California. The hires highlight the campaign’s commitment to work for every vote in the state, building a regional infrastructure to support the work of the nearly 400,000 supporters who have already taken action.

Staff Profiles:

Shelli Jackson - California State Coordinator: A Central Valley native, Jackson has dedicated her career to voter education, outreach, and statewide campaign work. Jackson’s twelve years of professional experience demonstrates a deep understanding of the nexus between community organizing and political activism. With over five years of campaign leadership, Jackson led the charge on various successful but highly contentious Assembly races. In addition to her campaign experience, Jackson served as a Senior Advisor to the California State Legislature.

Susie Shannon - California Political Director: Shannon has worked as a senior advisor, campaign director and labor consultant for over 14 years on statewide and local campaigns in California. She is an elected member of the Democratic National Committee from California, where she has served since 2016. She has also served on the Executive Board of the California Democratic Party since 2007. In 2015, Shannon spearheaded legislation to place California on a Housing First model for homelessness, which passed the California legislature and was signed by the Governor in September 2016.

Melissa Byrne - California Grassroots Director: A Riverside County native, Byrne is an experienced leader at both the intersection of offline/online organizing and issue and electoral advocacy. She’s a nationally recognized leader in the work to make college free and end student loan debt. After serving as Bernie 2016 New Hampshire Digital Director, she became a leader in the work to hold Trump accountable from coast to coast by running strategic direct actions, including the largest sustained action in the Senate to elevate the voices of survivors and allies opposing Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court. Byrne has worked extensively with Ultraviolet, MoveOn, and CredoAction.

Sand Brim - California Policy Advisor: Brim is a longtime progressive activist. Brim has served in various senior roles including, Director of Strategic Campaigns, Senior Advisor, and speech writer for both the California Nurses Association and National Nurses United. Prior to that Brim was an attorney specializing in child abuse cases.

Daniel Andalon - Los Angeles Regional Director: Andalon has dedicated his career to public service through government affairs and community relations. During the summer of 2016, Andalon led a team in Central Valley California on a half a million dollar campaign for a bond measure in Tulare County and then helped elect Mayor Tim Sandoval in Pomona, later that year. In 2017, he served as the Deputy Campaign Manager for the Jimmy Gomez for Congress, ultimately getting him elected. Most recently, as campaign manager, he led a successful bid for State Senate for now Senator Bob Archuleta.

Robert Dempsey - San Diego Regional Director: Dempsey is a veteran Democratic campaigner with a 20-year history of working on behalf of Democrats and organizations throughout the country. In 2018, Dempsey oversaw the Congressional Campaign Program for the California Democratic Party, flipping a total of seven seats – including every seat in Orange County – blue. In 2016, Dempsey served as the State Director in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and New Jersey for the presidential campaign of Senator Bernie Sanders, at the conclusion of the campaign he returned to California to run Doug Applegate’s congressional campaign against Republican incumbent Darrell Issa in CA-49, bringing the first-time candidate to within 1,621 votes of unseating the wealthiest member of Congress.

Jane Kim - Bay Area Regional Director: Kim is a proven progressive leader who has fought to expand access to affordable housing, protect renters, close the income gap, and improve public schools. From 2011-2019 Kim served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, representing a diverse district in San Francisco, including the lowest-income residents and the wealthiest zip code in the City. Prior to being a Supervisor, Kim was a community organizer at Chinatown Community Development Center, a civil rights attorney at the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights, and served as President of the San Francisco Board of Education. Kim is the daughter of immigrants from South Korea.

Samuel Sukaton - Inland Empire and Orange County Regional Director: Sukaton was previously Associate Director of Inland Empire United, successfully electing more than a dozen municipal candidates across San Bernardino and Riverside in 2018. He's also consulted with Annie Cho for Los Angeles City Council and the California League of Conservation Voters. Prior to his work at Inland Empire United, Sukaton worked as a Southern California political organizer with SEIU-UHW, GOTV Director for Eloise Gomez Reyes' 2016 campaign for the California State Assembly, an anti-fracking and fair trade organizer with the Sierra Club from 2014-16, and a field organizer with Sandra Fluke for California State Senate in 2014.

Democratic Presidential Forum will Take Place During CDP Convention in Long Beach

San Francisco, CA – California Democratic Party’s (CDP) Acting Chair, Alexandra “Alex” Gallardo-Rooker, announced today that the CDP and Univision have agreed to partner together to host a Democratic Presidential Forum during the party’s Fall Endorsing Convention in November. The Presidential Forum will take place at the Long Beach Arena on Saturday, November 16, 2019 during the state party’s second gathering of 2019.

“While this is not a debate, it is a forum that will focus on issues important to Californians and to the Latino community,” said acting Chair Rooker. “We think it will be a fantastic addition to that convention and will once again highlight the importance of the Latino Vote and California’s impact in the Presidential Primary. As the first Latina to Chair a major party here in California, I can’t tell you how proud I am of this partnership.”

The Mexico City-born Gallardo-Rooker, in her capacity as acting Chair of the California Democratic Party, is the first Latina to ever lead a major political party in California. Under her guidance, the CDP’s staff and volunteers have continued to make strong progress as it prepares for the 2020 election. No CDP chair has fundraised more resources ($1.5 million) in their first six months as chair than Gallardo-Rooker.

Gallardo-Rooker, who previously served as California Democratic Party First Vice Chair, became acting Chair with the resignation of former Chairman Eric Bauman in December 2018. Once a new chair is elected over the weekend, she will return to that post. Gallardo-Rooker has served as an officer with the California Democratic Party for the past 21 years.

LATER NEXT WEEK: Inslee to discuss clean water for all and environmental justice in Detroit on Tuesday, will deliver major climate speech Wednesday in New York
Seattle – On Monday, Washington Governor Jay Inslee will travel to Iowa for four events, meeting with voters in the Des Moines area and sharing his vision for America’s clean energy future.

Later in the week, Inslee will travel to Detroit on Tuesday, where he will listen to residents in Michigan’s most polluted zip code discuss the importance of clean water for all and environmental justice. On Wednesday, Inslee will deliver a major policy speech at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City. He will then return to Iowa on Sunday, June 9 in Cedar Rapids, for the Iowa Democrats Hall of Fame Dinner.

On Monday, June 3rd, at 8:30 AM CT, Inslee will hold a roundtable hosted by NARAL in Des Moines. Inslee will hear from Iowa women, medical professionals and policy leaders discussing their personal experiences. Inslee will talk about the recent attacks on women’s reproductive rights nationwide, and the importance of a president who will protect women’s health. Gov. Inslee signed Washington state’s Reproductive Parity Act to protect women’s health coverage for a full range of reproductive services, including abortion.

At 11:00 AM CT, Inslee will then travel to Ankeny to tour Des Moines Area Community College’s Advanced Technology Center. Inslee will explore the center’s Wind Turbine Lab and Tool and Die Lab, while learning more about the school’s clean energy program from students, staff, and members of Power Up Iowa. Inslee will conclude the tour by visiting the campus’ working wind turbine. Inslee’s comprehensive “Evergreen Economy” plan calls for increased investment in community and technical college clean energy programs like the one at Des Moines Area Community College.

Next, at 3:30 PM CT in Urbandale, Inslee will hold a meet and greet with Urbandale Area Democrats. Inslee will answer questions from the group and discuss the urgency of defeating climate change and growing millions of jobs in the clean energy economy.

Later, Inslee will return to Des Moines at 7:00 PM CT to meet with more than 80 members and supporters of the Asian & Latino Coalition. Inslee will share the details of his recently released “America’s Promise” immigration plan and answer questions about his campaign, climate change, and the political empowerment and civic engagement of Asian and Latino communities.

On Tuesday, June 4, Inslee will travel to Michigan for an environmental justice listening session and tour at 11:00 AM ET in Detroit’s 48217 zip code, the most polluted zip code in Michigan. Gov. Inslee will hear about the impact of pollution on Southwest Detroit residents, and he will discuss the Clean Water for All proposal in his Evergreen Economy plan.

On Wednesday, May 5 at 7:45AM, Inslee will give a major speech on climate change and hold a discussion at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.

Inslee will return to Iowa the following weekend, where he will take part in the Iowa Democrats Hall of Fame Dinner.

Inslee, who is the only presidential candidate who has made defeating climate change and building a clean energy economy the cornerstone of his campaign, has been making stops to speak with voters across the country as part of his “Climate Mission Tour.” He recently announced his “100% Clean Energy for America” and "Evergreen Economy" plans, and since launching his campaign in March, has visited Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Nevada, Texas, California, New York, Illinois, and Oregon.
