Hello Iowa! I’m here to talk about something that people all across Iowa and all across America know down deep in their bones: our democracy has been hijacked by the rich and the powerful.

They make it work for themselves, and they leave everyone else behind.

We see it every time a corporate executive threatens to cut pay and move jobs overseas.

We see it every time an insurance company denies treatment and denies access to the doctors that people trust.

We see it when a criminal justice system tears apart Black and Brown families.

And the list goes on: people crushed by student loan debt. We see it over and over. We see it when a gun industry prevents any vote on sensible legislation that could save the lives of our children. We see it when an oil industry continues to drill and calls all of the shots in Washington. That is corruption, plain and simple, and we need to be willing to call it out for what it is.

If we’re going to meet the big challenges of our time, then it’s going to take big structural change and that starts with you, Iowa.

You know, a lot of people are afraid of big structural change. Afraid because they’re already rich and powerful and they may lose influence. Afraid because they’ve built lives sucking up to those who are rich and the powerful. Afraid because they see an America where they won’t be able to make the changes they need.

Afraid because they are either too cynical or too downtrodden to believe that change is possible.

Well, not me! I believe in change and I know we can get it done. And why do I know we can get it done?

Because I’ve done it.

So I want to tell you a story about a toaster.

Back when I was a young mom, toasters could actually set houses on fire. Really. Those little toaster ovens didn’t have a shut off switch, so you could put in the bread, hear the baby cry, leave the room and come back, and your toast would literally be in flames, sometimes along with the kitchen curtains and kitchen cabinets as well. And then a federal agency stepped in and said “Enough! You can’t sell toasters in America that can have a one in five chance of burning down your house.” Done! No more toaster fires.

By the early 2000s, mortgages in this country had gotten so complicated and so dangerous that they had a one in five chance of costing a family their home, not because of fire, but because of foreclosure. Only this time, the federal government was not on the side of the families, it was deep in the pockets of the big banks.

In fact, so deep in the pocket of the big banks that they permitted millions of those mortgages to be sold and they crashed our economy. That was 2008.

So I had an idea. And the idea was a consumer agency that would protect people when they got mortgages or credit cards or payday loans the same way that other consumer agency had protected people when they bought toasters.

So here’s the deal. I went to Washington and I tried to talk to everybody I could about this idea. And they told me two things. Almost everyone I talked to said the same two things. First: That is a great idea. You could make a real difference. That’s structural change, yes! And the second thing was don’t even try.

Big money, the big banks, they will fight you. The Republicans will fight you. A bunch of the Democrats will fight you. You will never get this done.

I get it: Big, structural change is hard.

But it was the right thing to do. So we took on Wall Street, we took on the big money, and we won. And that little consumer agency has now forced the big banks to return more than $12B directly to people they cheated.

We know how to make government work for the people.

So, what did I learn from this fight?

I learned that, notwithstanding what the billionaires will tell you, what Big Ag or Big Banking or Big Pharma will tell you, that if we're going to meet the challenges of our time, we need big ideas.

Big ideas. Big ideas to inspire people and get them out to caucus and get them out to vote.

Big ideas to be the lifeblood of our party and show the world who and what Democrats will fight for.

Big ideas to take back the Senate and put Mitch McConnell out of a job.

We need big ideas AND, here’s the critical part, we need to be willing to fight for them.

It’s easy to give up on a big idea. But when we give up on big ideas, we give up on the people whose lives would be touched by those ideas. 

And those people are already in a fight.

People who are struggling to pay their medical bills are already in a fight.

People who are crushed by student loan debt are already in a fight.

People who are denied the chance to vote or stopped by the police because of the color of their skin are already in a fight.

And those fights are all our fights.

Look, anyone who comes on this stage and doesn’t understand that we’re already in a fight is not the person who is going to win that fight.

Anyone who comes on this stage and tells you they can make change without a fight, is not going to win that fight.

Anyone who comes on this stage and tells you to dream small and give up early is not going to lead our party to victory.

This is a time of crisis, and media pundits, Washington insiders, even some people in our own party don’t want to admit it. They think that running some vague campaign that nibbles around the edges is somehow safe.

But if the most we can promise is “business as usual” after Donald Trump, then Democrats will lose.

We win when we offer solutions big enough to touch the problems that are in people’s lives. Fear and complacency does not win elections; hope and courage wins elections.

I’m not running some consultant-driven campaign with some vague ideas that are designed not to offend anyone. I’m running a campaign based on a lifetime of fighting for working families. I’m running a campaign from the heart.

Because 2020 is our time in history. 

2020 is our time to win the fight for a Green New Deal and save this planet.

2020 is our time to win this fight for Medicare for All – and save our people.

2020 is our time to win the fight for a 2-cent wealth tax – and invest in a whole generation.

2020 is our time in history.                                                            

Our time to Dream Big, Fight Hard and Win.

Thank you, Iowa! Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you, Iowa. Thank you, Iowa Democratic Party. Thank you fellow Democrats.

The first time I came to this state was as a volunteer, to knock on doors for a presidential candidate—a young man with a funny name.

And we knew the stakes were high then. The stakes are colossal now.

This country cannot afford four more years of Donald Trump. We will not recognize it if he gets reelected. We know what is at stake.

And we know he is going to do everything he can to hold onto power. But if you nominate me, his playbook isn’t going to work this time around.

See, I don’t get helicoptered in to a golf course with my name on it while pretending to care about the working class. I don’t even golf. I get around in a Chevy, that was built in Ohio by the same workers this president has let down.

I don’t go to work in an office in Washington, D.C. My office is about six hours that way down I-80 and out the window you can see our town’s ethanol plant, which is why I understand the measure of this president’s betrayal of American farmers, and I know how to talk about it.

And I don’t have to throw myself a military parade to see what a convoy looks like ‘cause I was driving in one around Afghanistan right about the time this president was taping Season 7 of Celebrity Apprentice. So that tough talk is not going to work against me.

But I didn’t just come here to end the era of Donald Trump, I am here to launch the era that must come next.

Because in order to win and in order to lead, it’s going to take a lot more than the political warfare we have come to accept from Washington, D.C.

We already have a divider in chief. I am offering a White House that you can look at on the news and feel your blood pressure go down a little bit instead of through the roof.

I am asking you to picture that first day the sun comes up in this country and Donald Trump is no longer the President of the United States.

A happy thought for sure — an end to the chaos, and the corruption, and the tantrums and the tweets, but what comes next? The sun will come up on a country even more torn up by politics than we are now, exhausted from fighting—and urgent crises will still be waiting for action.

A 14-year-old girl will be waiting for action, who wrote to tell me she’s already written out a will because she’s afraid that her next day in school might be her last.

A 12-year old will be waiting for action, who asked me about health care—not because she’s a young policy buff, but because she has juvenile diabetes and is afraid her parents will lose their coverage.

I am running to be the President who will stand amid the rubble, pick up the pieces of our divided nation, and lead us to real action to do right by Americans who have waited far too long.

I am ready to gather up an American majority that is hungry for change, that is done with division.

And I have seen that hunger across the country -- places you might not expect. In Shenandoah, Iowa, where a young man from a farm family stood up to ask me what role agriculture was going to play in ending climate change.

I’ve seen it in Granger, Indiana, when a diner filled up with conservative Republicans protesting the deportation of a neighbor they knew to be a good man.

And I’ll be seeing it in a few weeks on the morning of Thanksgiving Day, because in 2019 in rural Michigan, you cannot stop a man from going deer hunting with his husband’s father.

We’re ready to build this majority, a majority ready to deliver the most progressive reform to health care in fifty years — Medicare for All Who Want It — honoring your decision over whether and when you want it.

A majority, even in the red states, to do something about gun violence, to do something about climate change. To ensure the dignity of every American. To tackle systemic racism wherever we find it until your race in this country has no bearing on your health, or your wealth, your life expectancy or your relationship with law enforcement.

The American people are ready to get this done, to stand with our teachers, to let people of faith know that in our White House you won’t have to shake your head and ask yourself “Whatever happened to ‘I was hungry and you fed me, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, whatever you did to the least of these you did to me?’”

I will not waiver from my commitment to our values or back down from the boldness of our ideas. But I also will not tire from the effort to include everyone in this future we are trying to build -- progressives, moderates, and Republicans of conscience who are ready for a change. The time has come.

We will fight when we must fight, but I will never allow us get so wrapped up in the fighting that we start to think fighting is the point. The point is what lies on the other side of the fight. And what lies on the other side of that fight is the hope of an American experience defined not by exclusion, but by belonging. That is what we are here to deliver.

And if talking about hope and belonging sounds optimistic to you for a time like this, fine call it optimistic, but do not call it naive. Because I believe these things not based on my age, but based on my experience.

Iowa, I have seen in the dust of a war zone, Americans who had nothing in common besides the flags on our shoulders learn to trust each other with our lives.

I have seen in the ruins of factories, my city answer those who said we were a dying community by rising up together to build a better future.

I have seen what America can do and so have you. After all, you’re looking at someone who as a young man growing up wondered if something deep inside of him meant that he would forever be an outsider -- would never wear the uniform, never be accepted, never know love. And now you are looking at that same young man, a veteran, a mayor, happily married, asking for your vote for President of the United States.

That’s why I believe in this country. Iowans, I am asking for you to caucus for me on February 3rd because I know what the presidency is for. Because we know that the purpose of the presidency is not the glorification of the president, it is the unification of the American people. That is why we have the office.

So Iowa, are you ready to bring this country together?

Are you ready to turn the page to a new era together?

Then let us make history together, and we will have a lot to celebrate in November of next year, and we will know where to go from there.

DENVER — Michael Bennet will speak tonight at the Iowa Democratic Party’s Liberty and Justice Celebration at approximately 9 p.m. CT. 

Bennet believes our kids don't have time for us to waste the next 10 years fighting a losing battle over policies like Medicare for All — which Democratic leaders from Speaker Nancy Pelosi to former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack made clear today is bad policy and bad politics.

Instead, he will lay out a vision for the American people that addresses what matters most: an economy that works for everyone, an end to childhood poverty, a public option to achieve universal health care, free preschool, a living wage for the 70% of people who don’t graduate from college, a solution to the climate crisis that lasts a generation, and a fix to our broken politics. 

This is an agenda that is ambitious, can unite Democrats, and will win back some of the nine million people who voted for Obama then Trump. 

Bennet is the opposite of Donald Trump: He has a background in education and actually cares about kids; he fights to build an economy that works for everyone; he stands up for democracy and our allies; and he tells the truth—even when it’s hard. 

Before serving in the Senate, Bennet ran the Denver Public Schools, a district with 95,000 kids—the majority of whom were kids of color and kids living in poverty—and a billion dollar budget. He is the first superintendent to run for president. 

We need a new generation of leadership. We need a nominee who has won national races in a purple state. We need a nominee with a healthcare plan that is transparent, gives families a choice, covers everyone, and lowers costs. Tonight, Bennet will make that case to Iowa.

Our campaign has been about seeing clearly, speaking honestly and acting decisively in the best interests of America.

Though it is difficult to accept, it is clear to me now that this campaign does not have the means to move forward successfully. My service to the country will not be as a candidate or as the nominee. Acknowledging this now is in the best interests of those in the campaign; it is in the best interests of this party as we seek to unify around a nominee; and it is in the best interests of the country.

I decided to run for President because I believed that I could help bring a divided country together in common cause to confront the greatest set of challenges we’ve ever faced. I also knew that the most fundamental of them is fear — the fear that Donald Trump wants us to feel about one another; the very real fear that too many in this country live under; and the fear we sometimes feel when it comes to doing the right thing, especially when it runs counter to what is politically convenient or popular.

I knew, and I still know, that we can reject and overcome these fears and choose to instead be defined by our ambitions and our ability to achieve them.

I knew that we would have to be unafraid in how we ran the campaign. We’d have to run with nothing to lose. And I knew that our success would depend not on PACs or corporations but upon the grassroots volunteers and supporters from everywhere, especially from those places that had been overlooked or taken for granted.

We should be proud of what we fought for and what we were able to achieve.

Together we were able to help change what is possible when it comes to the policies that we care about and the country we want to serve. We released the first comprehensive plan to confront climate change of any of the presidential candidates; we took the boldest approach to gun safety in American history; we confronted institutional, systemic racism and called out Donald Trump for his white supremacy and the violence that he’s encouraged against communities that don’t look like, pray like or love like the majority in this country; and we were one of the first to reject all PAC money, corporate contributions, special interest donations and lobbyist help.

We proposed an economic program that focused on both equality and equity and would give every American the certainty that one job would be enough; and a healthcare plan that would guarantee that every one of us is well enough to live to our full potential.

We knew the only way our country would live up to its promise is if everyone could stand up to be counted. We released the most ambitious voter registration and voting rights plan, one that would bring 55 million new voters into our democracy, and remove barriers for those who’ve been silenced because of their race, ethnicity or the fact that they live with a disability.

We spoke with pride about El Paso and communities of immigrants. We elevated the plight and the promise of refugees and asylum seekers. And we proposed nothing short of rewriting this country’s immigration laws in our own image, to forever free from fear more than 11 million of our fellow Americans who should be able to contribute even more to our shared success.

And at this moment of truth for our country, we laid bare the cost and consequence of Donald Trump: the rise in hate crimes, the terror attack in El Paso, the perversion of the Constitution, the diminished standing of the United States around the world. But we also made clear the common responsibility to confront him, to hold him accountable and ensure that he does not serve another term in office. Committing ourselves to this task not as Democrats or Republicans, but as Americans first before we are anything else.

I am grateful to each one of you, and to all the people who made up the heart and soul of this campaign. You were among the hundreds of thousands of our fellow Americans who made a donation, signed up to volunteer or spread the word about this campaign and our opportunity to help decide the election of our lifetime.

You have been with me from the beginning, through it all. I know that you did it not for me personally, not for the Democratic Party, but for our country at this defining moment. Though today we are suspending this campaign, let us each continue our commitment to the country in whatever capacity we can.

Let us continue to fearlessly champion the issues and causes that brought us together. Whether it is ending the epidemic of gun violence or dismantling structural racism or successfully confronting climate change before it is too late, we will continue to organize and mobilize and act in the best interests of America.

We will work to ensure that the Democratic nominee is successful in defeating Donald Trump in 2020. I can tell you firsthand from having the chance to know the candidates, we will be well served by any one of them, and I’m going to be proud to support whoever that nominee is.

And proud to call them President in January 2021, because they will win.

We must support them in the race against Donald Trump and support them in their administration afterwards, do all that we can to help them heal a wounded country and bring us together in meeting the greatest set of challenges we have ever known.

I’m confident I will see you down the road, and I look forward to that day.

Ahead of the Liberty and Justice Celebration on Friday, November 1, Senator Kamala Harris’ field organizers and volunteers will mobilize to knock on thousands of doors throughout Des Moines and surrounding suburbs, instead of participating in the traditional sign wars at the LJ. Harris’ husband Doug Emhoff will launch the canvass, firing up the team ahead of an exciting day. SAN ANTONIO, TX (October 29, 2019) – This weekend, presidential candidate, former Obama Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Mayor of San Antonio, Texas, Julián Castro will return to Iowa to discuss affordable housing following a tour of a long-term housing facility, speak at the Liberty and Justice Celebration, and join a town hall hosted by the NAACP of Des Moines.
