Julián Castro to Strike Alongside University Professionals At University of California, San Francisco
Secretary Castro will participate in CWA union strike on Thursday and a Bay Area town hall on Friday
SAN ANTONIO, TX (Tuesday, May 14, 2019) – On Thursday, May 16 and Friday, May 17, presidential candidate and former U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary under President Obama and San Antonio Mayor, Julián Castro, will travel to Northern California to participate in a union strike at the University of California, San Francisco on Thursday, May 16, and a Bay Area town hall on May 17.
On Thursday, May 16, Secretary Castro will join an Unfair Labor Practice strike picket line being held by the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE) of the Communications Workers of America (CWA) at the University of California, San Francisco. Secretary Castro will deliver remarks to picketers as part of a strike being coordinated across the University of California system to protest the outsourcing of university jobs. On Friday, May 17, Secretary Castro will participate in a town hall with Santa Clara University students, faculty, and employees from Bay Area tech companies.
Secretary Castro's trip to Northern California follows the release of his 'People First Education' plan—a sweeping new approach to education that would reshape public education from pre-kindergarten through college. Secretary Castro’s People First Education plan calls for, among other tenets, universal pre-kindergarten for three- and four-year-olds nationwide; substantial federal investment to combat teacher attrition, shortages and chronic underpayment; comprehensive student loan debt reform to address the $1.5 trillion student loan debt crisis and ensure no student pays more than their income allows; and tuition-free college, university, community college, and technical and vocational education. The plan also includes specific policies aimed at mitigating persistent and stark disparities in both access and achievement experienced by students of color.
