Governor Bullock Will Bring His Message Directly to Voters with Local TV Partners in Iowa and New Hampshire

Helena, MT – Today, Montana Governor Steve Bullock’s campaign announced that on the same days as the DNC debates, Governor Bullock will participate in two televised town halls in Iowa and New Hampshire.

On Wednesday, Governor Bullock will appear on Iowa’s WHO-TV with moderator Dave Price. On Thursday, Governor Bullock will appear on New Hampshire’s WMUR with moderator Adam Sexton. Both appearances will air ahead of the debates and additional media logistics are forthcoming.

“I’m excited to be on the ground in Iowa and New Hampshire next week, talking directly to voters about the issues that matter most to them,” said Governor Steve Bullock. “I’ve won in a Trump state because I’ve showed up and listened to voters where they are – and that’s exactly what I'll do at these town halls and for the next 230 days until the first voters express their preference.”

As the only candidate who has won a Trump state, Governor Bullock will discuss his plans to win back the places we lost in 2016 and will highlight his roadmap to end the corrupting influence of money in politics. He will also focus on his record of success passing progressive policies through a nearly 60% Republican legislature, including expanding Medicaid, freezing college tuition, investing in public education, banning foreign money from elections, and strengthening protections for Tribal communities.

Helena, MT – Today, Governor Bullock released the following statement in response to the DNC's debate announcement. He also joined MSNBC’s Chuck Todd to discuss the DNC’s decision to exclude from the first debate the only candidate in the field to have won and governed in a Trump state. Rather than join the race earlier to meet arbitrary debate thresholds, Governor Bullock did the job he was elected to do and worked through mid-May with a nearly 60% Republican legislature to ensure nearly 100,000 people won’t lose their access to healthcare.

“If I had to choose between chasing 100,000 donors or getting healthcare for 100,000 Montanans — well, that’s the easiest decision I’ll ever have to make,” said Governor Steve Bullock. “More than any other time in my life, our country needs a new leader who can win this election and move our nation forward. As I've done my entire career, that work begins by ridding our system of the corrupting influence of money in politics so we can ensure every American gets a fair shot at success. While 20 candidates are on the debate stage in Miami, I will be talking directly to voters about my record of passing progressive priorities in a state Trump won, the importance of winning the places we lost, and how we are going to beat Donald Trump once and for all.”

“I knew that getting in at the time that I did would give me fewer opportunities to get on shows — with you and others. But I had a job to do. And if it ultimately ever came down to choosing between getting Medicaid reauthorized, getting 100,000 Montanans healthcare, versus getting in earlier just to try to bump on yet another poll, I’d make that same choice time and time again.”

“We ought to be talking about why the Democrats haven’t been able to break through both urban and rural areas — give people a reason to vote for us and not just against [the president].”

“What I’ll be doing, and the way that I’ve always won in Montana — three times in Montana — is putting people ahead of the sort of politics or the food fights, and I think that that’s how I’ve been successful, and I think it’s what folks want out of the next candidate for president.”

After achieving the required support in three separate polls by qualifying outlets, Governor Bullock has met the standard for inclusion and looks forward to making his case on the stage in Miami.

As the only presidential candidate who won a Trump state, Governor Bullock will share his unique record of progressive accomplishment, and will emphasize the need to not just energize the Democratic base, but also win back the places Democrats have lost in order to get our country back on track.

Governor Bullock joined the presidential race less than one month ago, working through mid-May in Montana’s semiannual legislative session to ensure healthcare for nearly 100,000 people.

Helena, MT — Today, as the DNC finalizes who will appear on the June debate stage, Governor Bullock released a new video highlighting the lifesaving impact of his work to expand Medicaid in the final days of the 2019 legislative session.

The video features a Montana woman whose well-being depended on Governor Bullock’s success in reauthorizing Medicaid expansion — a significant accomplishment that he achieved even with a nearly 60% Republican legislature and after Big Tobacco spent $26 million against the effort. Were it not for Governor Bullock’s decision to delay his entry into the presidential race until mid-May, his Medicaid expansion efforts might not have been successful, and the one-in-ten Montanans who rely on it could have lost their healthcare entirely.

In addition to expanding Medicaid to nearly 100,000 Montanans, in the final weeks of the legislative session Governor Bullock broke through partisan divisions to pass major investments in infrastructure and public education, ban foreign money from elections, and strengthen protections for Montana’s Tribal communities.

With these hires, Bullock for President will have 14 staffers on the ground and is one of the only presidential campaigns that launched with a fully deployed, grassroots, digitally-integrated organizing program in Iowa.
